Are you on the hunt for a new gaming monitor? A monitor with an IPS panel, a high refresh rate, and the fastest response time possible? And one that isn’t going to break the bank? Well, you’ve come to the right place!
Oh yeah? Why is that?
There has honestly never been a better time to buy a new gaming monitor. With the technology recently jumping ahead in leaps and bounds (thanks in no small part to this very monitor), slightly older models are becoming ridiculously inexpensive.
And, it’s no different with the ASUS VG279Q 27” Full HD. This was the very first IPS monitor to offer 1080p 144Hz gaming with a 1ms response time, and with that came a hefty price tag. However, nowadays, competition is strong, meaning prices have dropped dramatically!
So, join us as we dive deep into our ASUS VG279Q review and show you why this is a great option for you!

Design And Features
This 27 inch IPS (In Panel Switch) monitor has been ergonomically designed to suit every need, whether that be gaming or any other application. The height can be adjusted a full 4.5 inches (130mm) up or down, and the screen can be pivoted 90 degrees to allow for both landscape and portrait view. There is also +/- 90° side to side swivel and -5°/33° tilt.
The stand itself has a small rectangular footprint, and the arm is slightly angled back to allow for all this movement without taking up a huge amount of space. There is also a VESA approved wall mount, and the screen has been coated in 3H anti-glare, matte coating for minimal reflection issues.
What Makes IPS Panels So Appealing?
First up, IPS screens offer the best color accuracy and screen consistency of the panel types. They are also capable of faster response times, wider viewing angles, and much better color/contrast than many VA and TN panels.
And that is exactly what we see here!
The color accuracy and contrast levels are superbly balanced in the ASUS VG279Q. And with the addition of ASUS’s proprietary ‘Shadow Boost’ technology, dark and shadowy areas of the game are brightened without overexposing the lighter areas.
This is a huge help in not only increasing overall viewing pleasure, but it also adds a performance boost by making it easier to spot any targets hidden in the darker areas of any games you may be playing.
The contrast ratio is an astounding 1,000:1, which at the time of release made this panel by far the best option ever made available. The extra-wide, 178-degree viewing angle ensures that the color accuracy stays on point, and we found almost zero distortion (even if you are viewing from an unconventional angle).
Amazing features so far…
You’re not wrong, but it doesn’t end there!
The ASUS VG279Q was the first IPS panel to offer a 1ms response time. This is of the highest importance to gamers because the response time directly affects how smoothly your games will run.
A 1ms response time is as good as it gets, and with the introduction of AMD FreeSynch Technology, the smoothness only gets smoother! FreeeSynch works by matching the framerate of the graphics card to that of the monitor, removing any screen tearing, jumping frame rates, display stutter, and input lag.
Extreme Low Motion Blur…
The 144Hz refresh rate makes for easy work when it comes to even the fastest paced games. Refresh lag is all but eliminated, putting you in pole position whether you are playing a racing game, and FPS, or any other quick time title. Asus have also added ‘Extreme Low Motion Blur’ (ELMB) tech, which adds to the sharpness of the picture.
At the backside of the monitor, you will find all the input and output ports. While all bases have been covered (DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4, Dual-Link DVI-D), it would have been nice to see an extra HDMI port. There is also a headphone jack, and there are a pair of 2-watt speakers hidden inside that do a surprisingly good job.
The ‘smart cable management system’ lets you hide all your cables inside the stand itself – one of our favorite ancillary features.
Let’s have a quick chat about the resolution…
Yes, this a Full HD 1920 x 1080p panel, which for a long time was the industry standard. Although in the past two years, the market has shifted to 4K tech, which admittedly does look better overall, but don’t let that put you off this fantastic monitor.
Full HD is more than enough pixels for us, and when you take into account the features that you get, the deal becomes all the more sweeter. For a larger screen (above 40 inches), we definitely suggest a higher resolution panel, but at 27 inches, this is a fine setup.
Asus Eye Care technology…
Asus have done a great job trying to reduce the symptoms of CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) with Asus Eye Care technology. By reducing blue light, flickers, glare and making the whole assembly as ergonomic as possible, the symptoms of CVS (headaches, red and burning eyes, eye strain, mental fatigue) are reduced to the lowest levels possible!

ASUS VG279Q Review – The Wrap up
We hope that this review has made your decision a little easier.
