For budding and professional artists alike, a good desk is important for a variety of reasons. Getting the right desk can help you organize your workspace and can change your work ethic for the better. But it can also have a profound effect on the quality of what you produce.
It has got to serve a number of functions, so there are some attributes it needs. It has to be adjustable in its positioning. There will be times when you will need working angle options to best view your work. It needs to be stable and not move or vibrate when in use. It may also have to fit into an already crowded area, so space may be a consideration.
Lots of options…

Top 10 Best Desk for Artists In 2023 Review
To help you find the right desk for your needs, we have reviewed the top desks for artists. So, let’s go through them and find the perfect one for you…
1 SD Designs 2 Piece Comet Art, Hobby, Drawing, Drafting, Craft Table – Best Design Desk For Artists
If there is one company that knows a thing or two about designing equipment for art studios, then it is SD Designs. This is more than just an artist’s desk. It also incorporates some attached storage space, and they give you a padded stool.
All the space you need…
The complete unit is 50 inches wide and is about 2 feet deep. The height may go up to 40 inches, but this depends on the angle of tilt you have on the desk area. The unit may stick out from a wall up to two and a half feet. But extra to that requirement is the distance to accommodate the stool.
You will need to ensure you have enough space to accommodate the unit as the storage cupboards cannot be removed.
The desk has a decent tilt angle of up to 15 degrees, which gives you plenty of scope. Depending on your activity, you may need differing angles of sight, and this desk will accommodate your requirements. The desk has a pencil ledge that is detachable. It serves to hold writing or drawing implements even when the desk is tilted.
Plenty of storage…
The three storage cupboards are 13 inches square, so they will hold rulers and any equipment up to 12 inches. The cupboards are cardboard bases and are made of fabric. You might not consider them particularly rugged or extremely strong. They will though, hold the sort of art supplies that you are likely to keep in them.
Stability and durability…
The actual work surface of the desk has a spacious area of 3 feet by two feet. It has a centralized drawing edge that is two feet in length and is covered in vinyl. There is additional storage space built into the base. The main frame and work surfaces are made of steel, which gives it good stability and durability.
There are floor levelers included if they are required. Also included is a padded stool that stands 20 inches high.
Some might think that the storage cupboards are rather weak. But this is a unit that has a good price point and is good value for money with its added extra features.
- A strong, sturdy frame and plenty of working space.
- Includes a storage cupboard and a padded stool at a cost-effective price.
- Some of the woodwork is a little vulnerable.
2 SD Designs Glass Futura Craft Station – Best Desk for Professional Artists
Another artist desk, and this is special and worth including as a contender for one of the best desks for professional artists. This probably falls into the category of being a professional artist’s desk in many ways. It has got, though, one feature that some may not appreciate. More on this later.
It has a very strong design with legs that are made from aluminum. The feet have plastic caps to ensure stability on either wood or carpet floors. It has a shelf that is removable if you wish and also an extra small shelving system. This sits underneath the desk and has small plastic trays. It is designed to conveniently hold small objects like pens, etc. It is also removable if you don’t need it, but we think it is a good idea.
Everything in its place…
On each side of the working area, there are small holders for any objects you may be working with. This may include pencils, rulers, or T-squares. The design extends to a small lip at the bottom of the working area. This is to stop papers or other objects from falling off the desk. Very useful when working the desk on a tilt.
It all looks very good, doesn’t it? But we have to mention a feature some won’t like. The working surface is made of glass. Some people need a clear surface for work. It is tempered glass or safety glass as some may know it, and it is tinged blue. You haven’t got to worry about security as the glass can hold up to 70 pounds of weight. Just don’t sit on it.
All the range you need…
The actual working surface is 38 inches by 24, and it has a tilt angle of up to 35 degrees. Hence, you need the security of your pens and papers with the lip feature we have already discussed.
This unit does not come with a chair, so you will need to get your own. A very well made, stylish yet functional desk with plenty of very good design features. And at a price which we don’t think is expensive at all.
- Nice design with plenty of storage features.
- A reinforced glass top and stable base and tough build.
- Some may not feel comfortable with the glass top.
3 Studio Designs Futura Tower, Silver/Blue Glass – Best Desk for Designers and Artists
With this desk, we are staying with Studio designs and also staying with the glass top feature. Once more, this is a superior desk and workspace that is definitely suitable for the professional artist or designer.
If you read the previous review of the Futura Craft station, then you will immediately recognize the similarity in designs. The legs are the same shape aluminum with plastic feet and also the reinforced glass working surface.
This though, has a few more extras…
It includes a top shelf and a corkboard that also has a magnetic area. Magnets are supplied. There are also a few extra storage holders for basic equipment. This makes it quite a tall unit. In fact, with the corkboard in place, it is about 58 inches in height. Add this to the width of 54 inches and a depth of 30 inches, and you have a substantial work station.
What gives it the extra height is the valuable addition of the corkboard. This can be left off if you wish, but then maybe you should consider cheaper units without a board.
When it comes to seating…
The actual working area is a large 33 by 21 inches, but it does sit quite close to the floor in regard to the rest of the desk. You will need a chair that goes quite low, about 28 inches from the floor, to get your knees under.
The drawing surface will tilt to 35 degrees. This does not affect the corkboard at all but will impact on the small plastic storage trays located on the desk. You should ensure things don’t fall out if using an extreme tilt. The work surface has a pencil tray that is removable if you wish.
Make sure you have enough space…
One thing you will need to consider with this desk is that it will protrude quite a long way from the wall, with the chair that might reach three feet. Make sure you have enough space.
This is a very well made and functional desk and certainly one to be considered as the Best Desk for Artists. Because it has quite a low sitting design, it might take some getting used to. At the top of the price scale but certainly worth the money.
- Very good design with plenty of storage space.
- Plenty of extra features and storage space.
- Some may not like a glass surface.
4 Sauder Computer Desk – Best Office Desk for Artists
Here we have a more conventional office desk. That, of course, will make it less suitable for the artist or architect as basic functions like tilt are not available. It is more suited to work with a computer, though it could have other functions.
One thing to be aware of with this desk is the weight. It will be delivered flat packed, of course, but when assembled, it will weigh 106 pounds.
What’s it made of?
It is made from a combination of laminated particleboard and real wood. The doors are wood. The doors do not have locks. It has two drawers that have traditional metal runners, and both have safety stops. There is also a file drawer that holds European size hanging files.
The design includes space for a vertical CPU tower. This is located behind one of the doors and has an adjustable shelf. Centrally under the work level, there is a shelf for a keyboard that pulls out.
More than enough workspace…
This also has metal runners and a safety stop. Grommet holes are built in to allow easy cabling. It is a decent size measuring 59.45 by 23.47 by 29.02 inches, so the work surface is more than adequate for most situations.
One potential issue with this desk is that once assembled; it will not like being moved too often. Being particleboard, the screw fittings will not be as secure as real wood.
Not sure about re-assembly…
Also, once assembled, we doubt it would not take too kindly to being unassembled and assembled again in the case of a room or house move. It has a nice look and is a decent piece of furniture. But there are some drawbacks.
- Nice design with plenty of cupboard space.
- Good finish and attractive look.
- Very heavy and might not have long term stability.
5 SD STUDIO DESIGNS Wood Drawing Table – Best Wood Desk for Artists
We do seem to be spending most of this review looking at SD Studio design products. But they are rather good. This particular desk is quite a rare design in that it is made from real wood as against particle or fiberboard.
Well worth it…
As a result, it is more expensive, but many people would agree it is worth paying the extra amount. The frame, legs, and work surface are all solid wood and nicely finished. This gives this desk a certain elegance that some others do not have.
The main work surface area is 42 inches by 24, and it has a depth of 30 inches. Built-in is a very useful wooden drawer that slides out. It has five separate partitions for storing pens, rulers, pencils, even articles like staplers. The top has 16 adjustments for the angle of tilt. These extend from having a flat surface to an angle of thirty degrees.
So it looks good and is functional but…
There is a bit of a drawback, in that there are no lower fittings of support beams at the lower end of this table. There are at the top obviously, but where the legs reach the floor, there is nothing. This will inevitably mean that it could be vulnerable. It could very easily be unstable and move about when in use.
We are not sure why SD would design it in such a way as the rest of the table is very good. But if you need a steady hand, drawing intricate things, this might not be the table for you.
- Very nice design made with real wood.
- Well-placed and useful storage tray.
- Might be a little unstable.
6 ZENY Height Adjustable Drafting Draft Desk Drawing Table – Best Adjustable Desk for Artists
This desk from Zeny can be put to a number of functions. It can be used as an artist’s desk for drawing, painting, or design purposes. The top of the table will adjust its tilt from 0-45 degrees. It will also adjust from a height from the floor of 28 to 35.8 inches. With the varying height and tilt facility, it will be suitable for a variety of work functions.
If you don’t need it in that mode, then the desktop can be moved flat and used as a traditional desk.
Do you have enough space?
The working area of the desk is 34 inches by 23.5 inches. The actual dimensions of the desk as a complete unit, though is 55 by 23.6 by 28 inches, rising to a maximum height of 35.8 inches. You will, therefore, need to ensure you have sufficient space available.
The wooden elements are made of a decent quality MDF material, and the legs and supports are heavy-duty metal with a powder coating. The legs have a good design and are stable, and there are feet at each corner to protect your flooring. The balance is good, and it feels very secure. Surprisingly it is not that heavy at just under 60 pounds.
Space and storage…
The desk area is well-apportioned and has a lip to prevent sheets of paper slipping off when the desk is tilted. There are compartments to the right for pens, rulers, and other drawing implements.
Underneath the desk are two very spacious drawers for storing other necessary equipment. These are made from a cloth material and cardboard. Not the strongest to be honest. There is also a premium padded stool provided that has a 12-inch diameter and is 21 inches high.
Is the price right?
This is quite a well-designed desk at a reasonable price point. It is quite strong and has a very stable base to prevent any movement when working. As we said, it is also multi-functional, which gives you certain options for its use.
- An interesting design that gives you a variety of options for use.
- Very stable and securely built at a decent price point.
- Maybe they could have done better with the materials for the drawers.
7 OneSpace Craft Station – Best Desk for Architects and Artists
Another quality artist desk, this time from OneSpace. This is a desk designed with the draftsman or architect firmly in mind. It is made from an extremely stable heavy-duty steel frame with a widely spaced base foot width.
Each end of the base has a caster. Two of the casters have locking facilities. It is strong enough to hold 130 pounds in weight, but we recommend you don’t sit on it.
Glass that’s built to last…
Being tempered glass, which is another way of saying safety glass, it is strong and able to handle the pressure of being leaned on quite comfortably.
The desk has a width of just over 41 inches and is 24 inches deep. With a chair, this may protrude from the wall by up to three feet. It will rise from a height of between 31.5 to 49 inches depending on the amount of tilt applied. It actually has a very impressive tilt capability of up to 62.5 degrees.
Nooks and crannies…
There is a tray at the lower end of the work surface that will hold pens, rulers, etc. This will stop them from falling off the desk even when the tilt angles are quite extreme. On the right and left of the desk are removable supply trays that also hold work material. There are two drawers to hold other work materials like staplers or pens for storage. They have easy slide-out actions.
This is an excellent desk and deserves to be included in our choices for the Best Desk for Artists. The price tag is very attractive, and it has a strong and stable build.
- Stable build with a tough glass surface.
- Plenty of storage space and a great tilt angle.
8 Studio Designs Vintage Rustic Oak Drafting Table – Best Oak Desk for Artists
If you are looking for a working desk that will also add a bit of style to your home, then read on. There is a certain classic turn of the century styling to this table, which to some, will be appealing.
It has a solid wood frame that is built to be stable and durable. There is ample width at floor level for the base to give it rigidity. The width spread of the base is more than adequately supported by two further cross beams. They run the length of the desk with a further crossbeam below the work surface, adding more stability. All created in wood it has an impressive look.
How does it measure up?
The total width of the desk is 42 inches, and it has a depth of 30 inches. Add on the size of a stool, and you will likely need three and a half to four feet of working space in depth. It extends to a height of three feet.
It is actually a very basically designed desk with not too much in the way of storage or materials support space. All you really have with this desk is a pencil groove and a pencil ledge that runs for 24 inches at the lower end. It has a tilt angle of 0 to 90 degrees.
For the minimalist…
This is a desk for someone who doesn’t need too much clutter and materials around them. It has been given an antique look to make it fit into your home decor as its first priority. As such, it will not suit those who need materials all around them. It might be considered more of a hobby table. However, you describe it; as a working desk, it is very impressive to look at.
- Very nice design and build quality.
- Well-made with a solid wood frame.
- Some will need storage and other material space.
9 Best Choice Products Drawing Drafting Craft Art Table – Best Arts and Crafts Table
Best Choice is a company that does not manufacture its own products but sources them from other manufacturers. They are therefore often able to offer some good products at a very competitive price, which is what we have here.
At first sight…
This desk might seem a little crowded, but it does have plenty of space around it. It is larger than a lot of its competitors measuring 47 inches wide, with a depth of 23.75 and has a height range depending on the tilt angle of 30 – 45 inches.
It has a shelf built-in underneath the work surface at knee height. There are also three fabric material drawers built-in on the right side of the unit. This gives you plenty of storage space for pens, staplers, and any other materials you may use.
Built with purpose…
It has an all-metal support structure with a reasonably wide feet base. There is no cross beam at floor level through which might give you some stability problems. There is a cross beam just below the work surface. It comes with a padded stool. The working area is made from MDF fiberboard.
It is quite nicely designed and very functional. We wouldn’t say it is of the highest quality, but the price point reflects that. If you are on a budget, it makes a decent buy.
- Well-thought-out design with plenty of workspaces.
- Adequate storage at a reasonably cost-effective price.
- Some will need a higher quality desk.
10 Coaster Home Furnishings Artist Drafting Table Desk – Best Drafting Table for Artists
If you are in need of a very functional table with a simple design and a glass top, this could be of interest. It is by its design quite similar to a Studio Designs desk we looked at.
It is not as large as some desks, which will be an advantage for some people who have space limitations. And is just 41 inches wide and has a depth of 24 inches.
The top working area is 36 inches, which some may consider a little small but will be adequate for a lot of people. It has an impressive tilt of up to 60 degrees. The working surface is made of tempered glass, and it has a very secure and stable feel to it.
Small but solid…
It has a solid build with steel tube legs with plastic cups on the feet. The feet can be adjusted to accommodate uneven floors. This will give you a good balance for the desk, so it doesn’t move around. At each end, there are holders for various items that you may be using, to keep them at hand.
One of the problems with these holders is that they are raised up. This could cause problems if you are using a T-square. They are detachable, though, if you need to remove them. It also has three small drawers underneath the top surface for storing materials.
This is definitely a working desk…
And Coaster has done a decent job in creating a desk that functions but also looks good. It is quite small, but it is well-balanced and sturdy. And if you need a lot of tilt, then this desk will certainly give you that — a good buy for the money.
- Good design with good materials.
- A smaller size will be useful for some.
- Some will need more space and facilities.
Best Desk For Artists Buying Guide
There are a few things to think about when you are buying an artist’s desk. The first thing is probably its use.
What Is It For?
An art desk is a specialist piece of furniture, so why are you buying it? If it is for work, then it depends to a certain extent what work you do. You may be needing some special design features. For instance, a glass surface with underlighting might be essential.
Others, of course, will not need or like that option. If it is for drawing or sketching or even drafting again, it will require some special features. If it is for home, then how it looks might be more important. Many people, of course, work from home these days, so you may need to combine the best of both worlds.
Will you need to be able to keep a lot of materials to hand when you are working? If so, then you will need some space and features to accommodate that. Most desks have some form of storage, and some have drawers to keep objects in.
How much space the desk takes up is going to be vital. Have you actually got the room to fit it in? Some are quite a size and will need a reasonable amount of space. In an office, it might not be a problem but for home use, decide where you will put it. Then you can ensure you have the space available.
Probably not so important if it is for an office environment, but at home, it is a different thing. There are some excellent designs we looked at. Some are real wood and others part wood part composite like MDF. They will add a certain style to your home if that is what you want.
One final thing to consider is whether the purchase includes a seat. You will obviously need to sit on something suitable. If what you propose to buy hasn’t got a seat and you haven’t got one yourself, there will be an extra cost.
