1 Fujitsu fi-7160 Color Duplex Document Scanner – Workgroup Series – Fastest Document Scanner

Starting off this Best Document Scanners roundup is the f1-7160 from Fujitsu. With the fi-7160 in your home or office, you can scan up to 9,000 documents a day!

It has an 80-page automatic feeder capable of duplex scanning at a 600 dpi optical resolution. This unit can scan as many as 60 A4 landscape documents per minute at a resolution up to 300 dpi.

You can also adjust the output resolution in single increments from 50 to 600 dpi. Thanks to the included software, you can also interpolate your scans up to 1200 dpi.

Skew is greatly reduced, while feeding is assured…

Anyone who has scanned multiple documents in a row might have likely come across scans that aren’t correctly aligned. Fujitsu eliminates this problem with the use of Skew Reducer technology. The automatic feeder uses multiple brake rollers to transition from page to page smoothly. This makes sure that every page is correctly aligned before being scanned.

The Fujitsu fi-7160 also incorporates a paper protection function that monitors the paper feed distance to ensure your documents aren’t harmed while being scanned.

Image cleaning and easy operation…

To use this scanner, you will need to connect it to a computer using either a USB 3.0, 2.1, or 1.1 connection.

It comes with Fujitsu’s PaperStream Capture and PaperStream IP software that helps clean-up images, allowing for easier optical character recognition.

While you can control this scanner directly from your computer, you can also use the integrated LCD and the buttons located on the scanner. This LCD allows you to monitor the total amount of scans completed as well as gives you the ability to adjust basic scan settings.

Fujitsu fi-7160

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Can output up to 9,000 scans a day.
  • Skew Reducer ensures your scans are correctly aligned.
  • Automatic document feeder has page overlap and length detection.

Cons

  • Expensive.

2 Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 Color Duplex Document Scanner with Touch Screen for Mac and PC [Current Model, 2018 Release] – Best Document Scanner with Dust Detection

Another great Fujitsu scanner is the ScanSnap iX1500. It features an optical resolution of 600 dpi as well as five different scanning modes.

If you put the iX1500 in Normal mode, it will scan up to 30 color documents a minute at 150 dpi. For higher output resolution, you will want to use either the Better, Best, or Excellent mode.

Lots of versatility, with some limitations…

The maximum output resolution for color documents is 600 dpi, and 1200 dpi in monochrome. At that resolution, you will be limited to eight scans per minute, though. The iX1500 features a 50-sheet paper tray with an automatic feeder with length and overlap detection, but it doesn’t allow for automatic duplex scanning.

Even though you might be waiting a bit for your scans, they will turn out very detailed. This scanner is also extremely easy to use and even has integrated WIFI.

Ease of use…

Once you take this scanner out of the box, you will almost immediately notice the integrated 4.3-inch touchscreen. Even without reading the manual, you can quickly set up the scanner and connect it to WIFI via the touchscreen.

You can also use this interface to create multiple one-touch profiles. You can scan to email or even create a photo album at the push of a button, for example.

Dust detection is pretty cool…

The iX1500 also features dust detection capability that will actively monitor both the lower and upper sections of the scanner’s glass. If you have a fingerprint streak or a bit of dust on the scanner bed, the touchscreen display will notify you.

Fujitsu has included a CD containing drivers for both Windows and MAC, as well as Fujitsu’s robust ScanSnap software, with this scanner. With the integrated WIFI, you can even scan from a mobile device by using the Fujitsu ScanSnap Connect app, which is available for Android or iOS systems.

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Can connect it via USB or WIFI.
  • Can detect dust particles on the scanning bed.
  • Touchscreen can support multiple one-touch profiles.

Cons

  • You need to manually feed a document for duplex scanning.

3 Epson WorkForce ES-50 Portable Sheet-Fed Document Scanner for PC and Mac – Best Lightweight Document Scanner

Some document scanners offer a tremendous amount of portability. The Epson WorkForce ES-50 weighs just over half of a pound, allowing you to take this scanner with you from meeting to meeting.

Small size, with significant capability…

Don’t let its small form fool you. This scanner can output high-quality scans in a very reasonable amount of time. With an optical resolution of 600 dpi, you can scan up to 10 pages per minute at a resolution of 300 dpi. And with the included software, you can produce interpolated scans at 1200 dpi.

Scan speed will be affected by how fast you input your documents into the scanner, though. You will not find a paper tray on this scanner, and each document needs to be inserted into the single page feeder one at a time.

Versatility…

This scanner allows for great versatility when it comes to the different sizes of documents you can scan, though. It will accept documents up to 8.5- inches wide and up to 75 inches long! You can also scan much smaller things like a business card or receipt, for example.

The Epson SmartScan 2 software that is included can even combine multiple documents into one and includes OCR from Nuance.

So easy to use…

To power this scanner, you won’t need to worry about batteries or an external power adapter. Simply connect the included USB cable to your laptop or PC and start scanning.

Epson WorkForce ES-50

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Extremely portable.
  • Scans documents up to 8.5” wide x 75” in length.
  • Powered directly through its USB port.

Cons

  • It does not have a paper cartridge.

4 Canon ImageFORMULA R40 Office Document Scanner For PC and Mac, Color Duplex Scanning, Easy Setup For Office Or Home Use, Includes Scanning Software – Most Versatile Document Scanner

This next scanner is from Canon. Their imageFORMULA R40 scanner will look right at home in your office, scanning up to 40 documents per minute.

Scan just about anything…

It features automatic duplex scanning and has a 60-page paper feeder. This multipurpose paper feeder allows you to scan documents up to 118 inches in length or small business cards just as easily.

To control the R40, you can use the basic controls it has or initiate a scan from your computer via USB. The scanning bed has an optical resolution of 600 dpi and can output documents anywhere from 150 to 600 dpi in resolution.

Features and more features…

The amount of hardware and software features that this scanner has is rather extensive. Just to name a few, you will have auto color and resolution, auto page size detection, and background smoothing with bleed prevention.

Those, in combination with the integrated ultrasonic double-feed protection, you can rest assured your scans will come out nice and vibrant with a great amount of detail.

Easy setup…

The included Canon CaptureOnTouch software works on both Mac and Windows. It is easy to set up but does take a bit to get used to afterward.

You will also find Cardiris business card software as well as Readiris PDF Software included. They both work well at either creating multiple page PDFs or with extracting data from business cards; unfortunately, these features only work with Windows.

Canon ImageFORMULA R40

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Scans come out very crisp.
  • Scan directly to the cloud with the included software.
  • Multipurpose 60-page feeder allows for great paper handling versatility.

Cons

  • Some of the included software only works with Windows.

5 Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W Wireless Document Scanner, Multi-Page Scanning, Color Touchscreen, Integrated Image Optimization, High-Precision Scanning, Continuous Scan Mode, Black – Best Multi Platform Document Scanner

Suppose you want a scanner that can connect to your network via either WIFI or Ethernet. In that case, the Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W might be right for you.

The ADS-2800W has a 3.7-inch color touchscreen front and center that is very easy to navigate and use. Once you are connected to your network, you can scan directly to Evernote or Google Drive, for example.

Multi-platform…

Brother has also included a software bundle that is compatible with Mac, Windows, and even Linux operating systems. This unit allows for OCR and PDF creation, as well as hole punch and background removal abilities, just to name a few.

It has an integrated automatic page feeder that can hold up to 50 pages at a time and features duplex scanning as well. You can output as many as 40 scans per minute, depending on your dpi settings.

The scanning bed has an optical resolution of 600 dpi, but you can produce scans at up to 1200 dpi with interpolation.

What’s NOT in the box?

You won’t find an Ethernet cable included in the box with this scanner. This is a shame since a wired network connection seems to be the most reliable when using this scanner.

The integrated WIFI is compatible with wireless 802.11 b/g/n protocols, allowing you to connect it to the most common routers. What it doesn’t seem to do is wake up the scanner quickly when connected via WIFI.

Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Compatible with Linux, Windows, and Mac operating systems.
  • Integrated Ethernet connection.
  • Scan from your mobile device with the Brother iPrint & Scan app.

Cons

  • Ethernet cable is not included.

6 Epson WorkForce ES-400 Color Duplex Document Scanner for PC and Mac, Auto Document Feeder (ADF) – Best OCR Document Scanner

Not all Epson scanners are as portable as the previous model we looked at. The WorkForce ES-400 is a scanner you will want to have placed on a desk since it weighs in at just over eight pounds.

It offers a respectable speed of up to 35 scans per minute at 300 dpi. You can also scan multiple different sized documents thanks to the 50-page automatic document feeder. This document feeder also includes dynamic skew correction as well as double-feed detection.

Multiple documents scanning comes easy…

Thanks to these features, you can reliably scan multiple documents or even extremely long documents without worry.

The ES-400 can connect to your Mac or Windows computer via USB. Epson also offers an additional Ethernet adaptor, allowing for network connectivity; unfortunately, this is sold separately.

How about software and controls?

On the right side of the ES-400, you will notice a set of buttons that allow you to control the scanner directly. These controls will enable you to turn the scanner on and to start or skip a scan, for example.

While this allows for most basic scanning operations, you will find yourself controlling the scanner mainly from your computer. To do so, you will need to head to Espon’s website and download the SmartScan software.

Superb OCR…

This software allows you to manage your scans easily and share them. This software also produces some of the best optical character recognition (OCR) results that we have seen so far, allowing you to edit your scans in no time at all.

Epson WorkForce ES-400

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Epson SmartScan software is very robust.
  • Network connectivity is possible with the use of an adapter.
  • Produces exceptional OCR results.

Cons

  • The integrated controls don’t offer very much functionality.

7 Brother High-Speed Desktop Document Scanner, ADS-2200, Multiple Scan Destinations, Duplex Scanning – Best Basic Document Scanner

The Brother ADS-2200 scanner pretty much the ADS-2800W’s little brother. It is similar in some ways and, in some ways, completely different.

So, what’s the same?

It offers a 50-page automatic document feeder that can scan a wide variety of documents from business cards to banners if need be. The scanning bed also features single-pass duplex scanning and switches document sizes seamlessly.

The included software is compatible with Linux, Windows, and Mac computers. It will automatically rotate your images and remove backgrounds, all while providing OCR. The ADS-2200 can also extract details from business cards just as quickly as the ADS-2800W.

What’s different?

Well, to begin with, the ADS-2200 is significantly cheaper. With that, you are going to lose the ability to network this scanner and are limited to USB connectivity only.

Scan speed is also maxed out at 35 documents per minute and at 300 dpi. You still have an optical resolution of 600 dpi, and scans look great, nonetheless.

No touchscreen…

You won’t find a touchscreen on this scanner, either. If you want to operate it directly, you will only find a few basic controls available.

Thanks to the reasonable price point and great image quality, this scanner is definitely a worthy consideration. That’s if you can live without network connectivity, though. If you can, it’s a superb Best Budget Scanner choice.

Brother ADS-2200

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Can handle a daily workload of 3,000 scans.
  • Automatic document size detection works flawlessly.

Cons

  • Limited connectivity.
  • Changing the scanner’s settings is time-consuming.

8 Brother Mobile Color Page Scanner, DS-620, Fast Scanning Speeds, Compact and Lightweight, Compatible with BR-Receipts, Black – Smallest Document Scanner

The last scanner we are going to look at next from Brother is their DS-620 model. This is another extremely portable scanner that you can toss in your bag or briefcase and take with you.

The DS-620 can be powered directly from your Mac or Windows computer by using the included USB cable. You will also find a software suite consisting of DSmobileCapture, Presto!, PageManager, and BizCard included.

A reasonable scanner…

It has a single sheet feeder that only offers simplex scanning. You can expect up to eight color scans per minute and at 300 dpi.

You can further interpolate the scans up to 1200 dpi, but we ended up having mixed results. While scanning some line art pictures, we actually felt like the interpolated scan was degraded compared to the optical version.

What about included accessories?

In the box, you will find a calibration sheet. In coordination with Brother’s DSmobileCapture software, this calibration sheet will end up making each scan more balanced.

Since this machine can scan small things, like ID cards or receipts, you will find a carrier sheet included. This carrier sheet allows you to attach small documents to it and will enable you to scan them more accurately.

Also included is a cleaning cloth for the scanner bed. And once you are done scanning, you can place the DS-620 in the soft carry case and take it with you.

Brother Mobile DS-620

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Very compact, measuring under 12-inches in length.
  • Carrier sheet allows you to scan small documents easily.
  • Comes with a soft carry case.

Cons

  • Interpolation scanning could be more reliable.

9 Canon CanoScan Lide 400 Slim Scanner, 7.7″ x 14.5″ x 0.4″- Best Flatbed Document Scanner

Moving up in optical resolution is the Canon CanoScan Lide 400. The Lide 400 is a flatbed scanner that takes crystal clear scans at 4800 dpi without using interpolation.

You can set this scanner on its back, or you can orientate it vertically with the included stand. This scanner’s lid is also double-hinged and allows you to scan documents up to 21mm thick.

Super high resolution and interpolation is offered…

It includes a USB-C cable to power the scanner and is backward compatible with USB 2.0 standards. Canon’s IJ Scan Utility for Windows is on hand; whereas, Mac users get the software’s lite version.

You will find basic functionality on offer directly from the scanners control panel. When you operate the scanner through the included software, you can adjust interpolation up to 19,200 dpi if you so choose.

This software also can correct the grain and fade of your image as well as digitally file your documents, among other things.

Scans per minute, and size…

Since this is a flatbed scanner, you can only input one document at a time. At 300 dpi, you will typically find a single scan can be completed in only eight seconds.

If you were to bump the resolution up to 4800 dpi, you would have to wait substantially longer. You will also need to make sure you have enough free disk space to store those hi-res scans. A typical A4 color scan will take up 8.7 megabytes of space. Bump the resolution to 4800 dpi, and you are looking at the same A4 picture using up 6.4 gigabytes of space!

Great for scanning artwork…

We found this scanner to work exceptionally well at scanning artwork. With the ability to scan at such a high resolution, you can capture the smallest details.

Canon CanoScan Lide 400 Slim

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Optical resolution of 4800 dpi.
  • With interpolation, you can increase the resolution up to 19,200 dpi.
  • Can scan documents up to 21mm thick.

Cons

  • Can only scan one document at a time.

10 CZUR ET16 Plus Advanced Book & Document Scanner, 2nd Gen Auto-Flatten&Deskew Tech, 16MP Sony Camera, Capture A3, 186 Languages OCR, Convert to PDF/Searchable PDF/Word/Tiff/Excel, Run On Windows&MacOS – Best Document Scanner for Books and Binders

The CZUR ET16 Plus is a rather unique entry into this Best Document Scanners roundup. This scanner uses a Sony 16MP camera to capture images.

It comes with a base that includes ten integrated LED lights for illuminating the surface that it is going to scan. You can use the ET16 Plus to scan flat-page documents up to A3 in size, but where it really excels is at scanning books or binders.

You can scan a 300-page book in as little as 10 minutes by using the ET16. This will vary depending on how long it takes you to turn the pages, though.

It’s all about the lasers…

There are three lasers incorporated into the base of the ET16 Plus. These lasers measure the curve of the page you’re about to scan.

In coordination with the CZUR software that is included, a proprietary algorithm will adjust the pixelation and make the page look flat. This software even has OCR for 186 different languages.

What?!? The pages don’t have to be straight?

According to CZUR, you don’t have to place the material you are scanning in straight. It can recognize the edges of the page you are scanning and adjust the tilt of it accordingly.

Most of the time, what resulted from our test were pages turned up centered and aligned, but what did falter was this unit’s OCR ability. We placed a handwritten document and a document printed in Arial font under the scanner, and the results were quite different.

The OCR software had no problem picking up the text on the page that was printed in Arial. On the other hand, the OCR software struggled to recognize even a third of the handwritten document.

CZUR ET16 Plus

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Only takes 1.5 seconds between scans.
  • The use of lasers allows your book pages to be scanned without any curvature.
  • Via the USB connection, you can mirror the scanner’s image to Zoom.

Cons

  • OCR isn’t that accurate at picking up handwritten text.

11 Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i Portable Color Duplex Document Scanner for Mac and PC (Parent) ((1) Black) – Best Duplex Scanning Document Scanner

Fujitsu also has an exceptionally good scanner to consider if portability is something you need. Unlike the other portable scanners we have looked at, the S1300i can do duplex scanning.

It even features a 10-sheet automatic feed paper tray with multi-page feed detection. This scanner provides an optical resolution of 600 dpi as well.

With the use of the included Fujitsu ScanSnap software, you can print up to 12 double-sided pages per minute and at 300 dpi. The ScanSnap S1300i has five different scanning modes that produce monochrome scans at up to 1200 dpi.

But there’s a catch…

Scanning speed will depend on how you power the S1300i, though. Included with this scanner, you will find two USB cables and an AC adapter. You can thus power this scanner through USB or directly with the AC adapter. If you do power it through USB, you will need to use both USB cables.

When the scanner is operating under USB power, scanning time is noticeably slower. With the scanner on Normal mode, you will get 12 color scans at 150 dpi per minute when powered by the AC adapter. Those same scans will take three minutes if the S1300i is being powered via USB. Scanning times do even out at one minute each when you set the scanner to Excellent mode, though.

A bit bulky, but still portable…

You will also notice that this scanner, while still portable, is a bit on the heftier side. It still comes in at under 12 inches long, but it does weigh just over three pounds.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300i

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • 10-page paper feeder
  • Can power it via AC or USB
  • Automatic duplex printing is available.

Cons

  • The power supply used will affect scanning speed.

12 Epson Perfection V600 Color Photo, Image, Film, Negative & Document Scanner – Best Document Scanner for Negatives and Photos

The last scanner we are going to look at is the Epson Perfection V600. With the word “Perfection” in its title, our expectations are quite high.

The V600 is another flatbed type scanner. This means you will be limited to one scan at a time, and each will need to be manually placed onto the scanner bed.

Like most of the scanners we have looked at, this scanner requires a USB connection to a Mac or Windows PC.

Great for scanning film negatives…

While this scanner is right at home with scanning your photos at an optical resolution of 6400 dpi, it truly excels at scanning film negatives.

When you lift the lid on the V600, you will notice a reflective mat that is used when scanning a document or photo. This mat will slide out and provide you access to a transparency window.

With the mat out of the way and the transparency window front and center, you can scan film negatives. The V600 comes with a holder that is compatible with 35mm and 6×22 cm medium film formats as well as with mounted slides.

Highly adjustable…

Once you load up the included Epson Scan software suite, you can make changes to your dpi settings, use OCR, and even restore your film images.

Film image restoration is possible due to Epson’s Digital ICE technology. Digital ICE will remove dust and scratches from new or old film negatives, leaving them much clearer and more detailed.

Slow scanning, but great quality…

Due to this scanner’s high optical resolution, scanning time is not quick, and the finished scans take up quite a lot of space on your computer.

For example, it will take four minutes to scan four slides at 3200 dpi, and this is without using the Digital ICE technology. Fortunately, if you are just scanning documents, you can have finished results in as little as six seconds.

Epson Perfection V600

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Scans documents, as well as photos and film negatives.
  • Film holder can organize up to four slides at a time.
  • Optical resolution of 6400 dpi.

Cons

  • The included software is complicated to use, especially when scanning film.

Best Document Scanners Buying Guide

Every document scanner will have its pros and cons. Therefore, next, we will go through the key things you need to consider.

Resolution

Fujitsu fi-7160 Color Duplex Document Scanner - Workgroup Series

Every document scanner will have an optical scanning resolution measured in dots per inch, also known as dpi.

One scanner might offer an optical resolution of 300 dpi, where another might have a 6400 dpi resolution. Understandably, a 6400 dpi scan will contain much more detail than a 300 dpi scan, for example.

Some scanners can increase the optical resolution through interpolation. This simply adds extra pixels in between the image’s existing pixels.

Interpolation is helpful when scanning for fine details in art, but interpolation can also degrade the image depending on the source material.

Connectivity And Software

All of the Best Scanners for Documents we have looked at will be able to connect to your computer by USB. Some scanners have integrated Ethernet or WIFI connectivity as well.

If you are going to be using your scanner in an office environment, then having it connected to the network can be a massive time saver. However, a scanner with integrated WIFI will make it even more accessible through the use of mobile applications.

Be Mindful Of Connectivity Configurations…

Epson WorkForce ES-50 Portable Sheet-Fed Document Scanner for PC and Mac

Just because your scanner connects to your computer via USB, WIFI, or Ethernet, doesn’t mean it will work right out of the box. Windows, Mac, and Linux all have basic scanner drivers pre-configured in their operating systems, but they only provide limited functionality.

To get the most out of your scanner, you will want to use the software that it comes with. This will either be on a CD included with the scanner, or it may be available for download from the manufacturer’s website.

Once downloaded and installed, you will be able to share, edit, use OCR, and more at the touch of a button.

Scans Per Minute

No matter if you use a scanner in the office or at home, each scan will take time to process. You will find scanners able to output 30 scans a minute and some that may only output a single scan.

The number of scans you can accomplish at a time can vary depending on the scanner’s hardware and software.

Not All Are Equal…

Not all scanners have multi-page feeders and can, therefore, only handle one document at a time. Just because you have to input a single page at a time doesn’t necessarily mean the scanner operates slowly, though.

You will often find that the scanner’s software and settings can contribute just as much, if not more, to the scanning speed-performance as the hardware. A scan done at a high dpi will always take longer to complete than one of a lower resolution.

Also, the manufacturer’s software will often automatically crop, align, and even help restore images. This will further increase the time it takes between scans.

Okay. Back to document scanners…

So, What Are The Best Document Scanners?

It’s not easy to find a scanner that can quickly scan at a high resolution and over a connected network. However, you will most likely have to sacrifice some speed for connectivity or resolution unless you want to spend a large amount of money.

However, the best document scanner, in our opinion, is the…

Brother ImageCenter ADS-2800W

It might not be the cheapest option out there, but you get what you pay for. With the ADS-2800W, you get wired or wireless network connectivity. Controlling this scanner is a breeze, thanks to the integrated touchscreen and included software suite.

It has a 50-sheet automatic feeder that seamlessly transitions from different sized documents. The ADS-2800W will put out 40 sharp and detailed scans per minute and at 300 dpi. And if that’s not enough, you can bump the resolution up to 1200 dpi thanks to interpolation capabilities.

Happy scanning.
