Best Ergonomic Office Chairs For Back Pain In 2023 – Top 10 Reviews

1 Ergonomic Office Desk Chair High Back Mesh Desk Chair with 4D Adjustable Arm Rests Computer Chair Height Adjustable and Head Support 3 Adjustable Tilt Tension – Black

This is a modern and interesting looking office chair.

What’s immediately striking is the unusual plastic frame at the rear which helps to provide the main support for the chair.

The design is modern looking but it’s likely to divide opinion. We think it’s going to be a look you either love or hate.

But it will suit most body types…

This is a well-built chair. It has a steel frame, it’s durable and has a weight capacity of 200kgs. It’s well-designed and it should be easy for the majority of people to find a comfortable position in it.

The chair is adjustable for height, tilt between 90 – 180 degrees, with tilt tension. Additionally, the chair arms can be angled, moved in or out, and up or down. The only thing you can’t do is completely remove them.

Would have preferred a little more adjustability around the neck…

The headrest can be moved up or down but cannot be moved in or out, though it can be completely removed. However, if you do choose to remove it completely the chair will look a little odd. We think it would have been better if there had been some depth adjustability to keep it out of the way if you feel it’s pushing your neck too far forward.

The chair back is made from a mesh fabric which is possibly the best material as it offers both support and plenty of breathability. It’s a comfortable choice of material.

The shape and structure of the chair give excellent back support and there is also a well-integrated lumbar support pillow. Luckily, this is adjustable, so it should be suitable for everyone.

The seat is well-padded and is nice and long, at 20” to be precise. This is a good size for most people. It should be fine for those with longer legs, though it may be too long for those with shorter legs.

Ergonomic Office Desk Chair High Back Mesh Desk Chair

Our rating:4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

Pros

  • Strong and durable.
  • Adjustable lumbar support.
  • It can tilt to 180 degrees.
  • The armrests are multi-adjustable.

Cons

  • The headrest cannot be moved in and out.
  • No seat depth adjustability.

2 X Chair X4 Leather Executive Chair, Black Leather with Headrest

From the front, the X Chair looks like any other office chair. However, from the back, you can see the steel back support that gives a clue to its ergonomically designed heritage.

Real, real leather…

This is a real leather chair. It’s worth stating this as we see so many imitation leather chairs trying to hide their cheap PU coverings. This is the real deal as you’ve probably already guessed from the price.

Whilst leather is not as breathable as mesh fabric on a chair, it still has breathable properties. It also looks beautiful and is likely to last for a considerably long time.

The chair we’re reviewing is black with a headrest. The good news is that if you don’t need a headrest you can save yourself a few bucks and order one without.

You can also choose from a few different colors and you can even order an extra-wide chair, although, it should be noted that the wide chair option only comes in black.

Supported from your lumbar curve right to the top of your neck…

The steel frame at the rear of the chair helps to fully support the seat back and, in turn, your spine. It features Dynamic Variable Lumbar support that adjusts itself every time your body moves. What’s more, the X Chair also has adjustable backrest height to ensure you’re supported, from your lumbar curve right to the top of your neck.

The tilt mechanism on the X chair is excellent and allows your body to move and recline effortlessly. Other adjustability includes height to the armrests, plus height and angle for the headrest.

Short or tall, you’re covered…

The seat is very well-supported and is also well-padded. It has a waterfall design and more importantly can be adjusted for depth as well as height. This means even the shortest or tallest of users shouldn’t have a problem with dialing in a comfortable setting.

X Chair X4 Leather Executive Chair, Black Leather with Headrest

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Real leather back and seat.
  • Adjustable lumbar and back support.
  • Seat can be adjusted for depth.
  • Excellent tilt mechanism.

Cons

  • It’s expensive.
  • The headrest is not adjustable for depth.

3 Hbada Ergonomic Office Desk Chair with Adjustable Armrest, Lumbar Support, Headrest and Breathable Skin-Friendly Mesh, White

This is an affordable and stylish looking office chair.

The chair is constructed from a combination of steel, white plastic, and black mesh material. The overall effect gives it a somewhat sleek and futuristic look. We like it.

Depth adjustable lumbar support… that’s impressive at this price…

The back of the chair gives a high level of support and is designed to give your spine maximum support. There is an additional adjustable lumbar support built in and the lumbar support, unlike a lot of other lumbar supports we reviewed, can be moved for both height and depth.

That’s impressive for such an affordable chair.

Other adjustments include, seat height, tilt and tilt tension. The arms can also be moved up and down, though only by 10cms. Unfortunately, there is no ability to angle the arms or take them off altogether. You get the absolute minimum of armrest adjustment with this chair.

The only other adjustable function on the Hbada Ergonomic Office Desk Chair is the headrest. This can be adjusted for height and angle though not for depth. We’d prefer to see the ability to adjust it for depth rather than angle, but so few chairs seem to offer this.

Easy-to-remove headrest…

One thing you can do with the headrest is to remove it if you don’t want it or it gets in the way. Unlike a lot of other office chairs, the headrest is easy to remove. Best of all, once it’s removed, the chair still retains those stylish, futuristic looks.

The back of the chair is covered in a breathable mesh fabric and this is an ideal material for office chairs. You’ll have no problems staying cool in this chair over prolonged periods.

The velvet cushion seat should also keep you comfortable. It’s well-padded and is suitable for most people. However, it isn’t adjustable for depth, so if you have long legs this may not be the office chair for you.

Hbada Ergonomic Office Desk Chair with Adjustable Armrest, Lumbar Support, Headrest and Breathable Skin-Friendly Mesh, White

Our rating:3.9 out of 5 stars (3.9 / 5)

Pros

  • Affordable.
  • Cool looks.
  • Lumbar support is adjustable for height and depth.
  • Breathable mesh fabric back.

Cons

  • Limited adjustability of the armrests.
  • The seat cannot be adjusted for depth.

4 Duramont Ergonomic Adjustable Office Chair with Lumbar Support and Rollerblade Wheels – High Back with Breathable Mesh – Thick Seat Cushion – Adjustable Head & Arm Rests, Seat Height – Reclines

The Duramont chair has a lot of features you’d expect from a chair designed to minimize back pain. A large number of chairs in this category and price bracket look very similar.

So, how good is this one? Nothing to lose trying it…

Overall, it’s pretty good. For the price, it offers all of the adjustability you’d expect. The build quality and choice of materials also offer fair value. But best of all, if you don’t like it, you can return it within 90 days under their no-quibble 100% money-back guarantee. Essentially, you’ve got nothing to lose!

The chair has a classic supportive sculpted frame back covered in a breathable fabric mesh. The seatback nicely conforms to your spine and has built-in lumbar support. The lumbar support can be adjusted for height and depth.

The headrest can be easily removed, should you choose to do so, and that won’t spoil the looks. The headrest can be moved up or down and you can also change the angle. Changing the angle does, to an extent, alter its depth, though not completely.

We’d have expected to be able to angle the armrests…

Sadly, you can’t change the angle of the armrests though they can be adjusted for height. Also, you can’t alter the depth of the seat on the Duramont Ergonomic Adjustable Office Chair. Whilst at this price we can accept not being able to alter the seat depth, we’d have expected to be able to angle the armrests.

The rest of the chair has the usual adjustments for height, tilt and tilt tension. The only other thing to differentiate it from other similar chairs is that this one uses rollerblade wheels rather than traditional castors.

Rollerblade wheels can be quieter on wooden floors and a little faster. However, this often depends on the quality of the castors or rollerblades being used. Realistically, we’d say there’s very little difference between the two where the quality is comparable.

Duramont Ergonomic Adjustable Office Chair

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Good value.
  • Well-constructed.
  • Breathable fabric mesh.
  • Adjustable lumbar support.

Cons

  • Height only adjustable armrest.

5 Herman Miller Embody Ergonomic Office Chair with White Frame/Aluminum Base | Fully Adjustable Arms and Hard Floor Translucent Casters | Charcoal Rhythm

No office chair review would be complete without at least one Herman Miller chair. These are the Cadillacs of the office chair world. And for very good reason. Herman Miller makes some of the best ergonomic office chairs for back pain that money can buy.

Expect excellence…

When you buy a Herman Miller chair you can expect excellence, though you might not expect such an outstanding choice of colors available. The choice is huge. There are 16 colors for you to choose from.

We’ve got the black one to review but we wouldn’t have minded getting eyes on either the Mulberry Rhythm or the Blue Moon Balance.

Like all Herman office chairs, this is well-built, having used the highest quality of materials. The fabric covering is made from a high-grade textile that helps to circulate the air and will keep you cool. Furthermore, it’s easy to clean and hard-wearing.

Intelligent, collaborative design…

It has ergonomic features built into it from the ground up. The Embody is a collaborative design and physicians and physical therapists have played key roles in its development. All of which guarantees the best levels of support for your back and body.

The chair back is contoured to the shape of your spine. Additionally, the BackFit system features an adjustable back. This allows you to fine-tune the back of the chair to align with your spine’s natural curve and body posture.

The backrest and seat also automatically move to conform to any micro-movements as you naturally shift around in your chair.

These small compensating movements of the chair help to better distribute your weight. In turn, this further reduces pressure on your back and additionally assists with better all-round circulation.

This is all great for your back and any potential back-pain…

So, what about the chair’s adjustability?

The Embody has got plenty. You have all the usual height, tilt and tilt tension adjustments. But you also get a depth-extendable seat. Perfect for optimum leg support, regardless of your height or leg length. Plus, the armrests that can be moved up and down, can also be angled in and out for maximum comfort.

The chair we’re reviewing has hard floor castors. These are quieter and roll more efficiently than the standard castors. However, if you’re working in a carpeted environment the standard castors would be a better choice.

There’s no doubt about it, this is a chair built to the very highest standards using the very best materials. It does have a price tag to match. But, the quality and the 12-year guarantee provided by Herman go a very long way to justifying the expense.

Herman Miller Embody Ergonomic Office Chair

Our rating:3.6 out of 5 stars (3.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Excellent build quality.
  • Well designed.
  • Excellent adjustability.
  • Excellent back and lumbar support.
  • A wide selection of colors.

Cons

  • It’s expensive.
  • No headrest.

6 AmazonBasics Mid-Back Desk Office Chair with Armrests – Mesh Back, Swivels – Black, BIFMA Certified

This is an affordable office chair with little adjustability.

If you’re shopping for an office chair on a budget this isn’t a bad option. But the truth is it’s only going to offer a fraction of features you’d find on higher-end chairs.

You can spin around as much as you want…

What you do get is the bare minimum of adjustability. You get height, tilt and tilt tension adjustments. That’s your lot. Unless you count being able to swivel around through 360 degrees, forever, as a great feature.

What you don’t get is, well frankly, everything else. No headrest, no moveable arms, no seat depth movement, no lumbar support or adjustable back support. You get the picture.

The chair is suitable for people up to 225lbs. Whether it’s suitable for your particular body shape or not, is unknown. This lack of being able to fully adjust could be an issue for anyone falling too far out of the ‘average’ size.

BIFMA certified is something…

Some positives about the chair, other than the price, is that it has a breathable mesh fabric and seat. It gives adequate support though it is a long way from class-leading. The chair is also BIFMA certified and comes with a full year guarantee.

One major advantage of this chair, though unintentional, is that the arms can be left off if required. This could be a huge benefit if you need an inexpensive studio or music chair. Without the arms, it leaves you free to play the keyboard, mix at a desk or play the guitar.

Since the arms cannot be altered for height, it could be that they are better left off anyway.

AmazonBasics Mid-Back Desk Office Chair

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Inexpensive.
  • Arms can be detached.
  • Breathable mesh fabric.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • Limited adjustability.
  • No lumbar or special back support.

7 AmazonBasics High-Back Executive Swivel Office Computer Desk Chair – Black with Pewter Finish, BIFMA Certified

This is a classic design for a high-backed office chair.

In common with most chairs of this kind and at this price-point, it has quite limited adjustability and functionality. The adjustments it does have include; height, tilt, and tilt tension. The AmazonBasics High-Back Executive chair can also be swiveled through 360 degrees and that’s everything.

Not designed to mimic your spine…

If you buy this chair, you’re going to have to rely on the chair being comfortable for you right out of the box. The ability to alter the position of the chair to fit your size and body type is almost non-existent. It’s also not ergonomically designed to mimic the natural contour of your spine.

Too obviously lacking…

Another feature missing from the chair that is clearly lacking is the inclusion of a lumbar support. The best ergonomic chairs for back pain usually not only have lumbar support but also have multi-adjustable lumbar support.

If you buy this office chair, and you have back pain, you might have to rely on the old rolled-up towel trick. That kind of seems to defeat the purpose of buying an office chair specifically for back pain.

We also think the inability to adjust the armrests will cause a problem for a lot of people. They feel too high, and since you can neither lower them nor take them off, it’s another potential source of discomfort.

The seat material is reasonably well-padded and is made from PU. The chair we’re reviewing is the black one. The two other colors available are white and brown. Hardly inspiring but hardly surprising.

This chair is just covered in PU…

Being covered in PU leather, the finish looks fine when it’s new but does have a tendency to peel and tear as it gets older. Another downside of PU leather is that it has no breathable qualities.

If you’re working in a cold climate or a well air-conditioned environment this will be fine. However, if you’re in a warmer climate the chair could get you feeling hot on your back quite quickly.

The truth is that this is a basic office chair that offers little in the way of relief for people suffering from back pain. It may be exactly what you’re looking for, however, for a large number of people, it’s unlikely to match their requirements.

AmazonBasics High-Back Executive Swivel Office Computer Desk Chair

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Affordable.
  • Good padding on the armrests.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • No lumbar support.
  • Not ergonomically designed for back pain.
  • Limited adjustability.

8 BERLMAN Ergonomic High Back with Adjustable Armrest Lumbar Support Headrest Swivel Task Desk Chair Computer Chair Guest Chairs Reception Chairs (Black)

This is a well-built and well-designed chair with a beautifully integrated ergonomic seat frame.

The seat frame has all the usual design features you’d expect from an ergonomic chair. It has built-in lumbar support, a fabric mesh chair back that’s breathable, and conforms to your body contours, plus a headrest.

Although it has lumbar support, it’s a bit disappointing that it isn’t adjustable. The best ergonomic office chairs have lumbar supports that can be adjusted for both height and depth, which is what addresses back pain in the best possible way. This has neither.

You can rock it though…

On the other hand, this chair has rockability. This doesn’t mean that the whole chair can be rocked. In fact, the chair back, and the chair back only, can be rocked without moving, or changing, the angle of the seat.

A neat feature.

Another feature we like is that the armrests can be completely folded out of the way. This is something that’s sadly missing from so many office chairs. Sometimes you want the armrests out of the way and they can be annoying.

Great for musicians and gamers…

One of the advantages of fold-away armrests is that the chair can be doubled up for use in a music studio. When you’re mixing, playing guitar or keyboards, you need a chair with armrests that can be moved out of the way. This can also be useful for gaming.

The BERLMAN Ergonomic High Back chair has the usual height, tilt and tilt tension but is missing seat depth adjustability. Given the price, this omission is perfectly reasonable.

BERLMAN Ergonomic High Back with Adjustable Armrest Lumbar Support Headrest Swivel Task Desk Chair Computer Chair Guest Chairs Reception Chairs (Black)

Our rating:3.8 out of 5 stars (3.8 / 5)

Pros

  • Strong integrated seat frame.
  • Rockability.
  • Breathable mesh fabric.
  • Armrests can be folded away.

Cons

  • Lumbar support is not adjustable.
  • No seat depth adjustability.

9 Ergohuman High Back Swivel Chair with Headrest, Black Mesh & Chrome Base

This office chair has most angles covered for adjustability.

The Ergohuman High Back Swivel Chair is constructed around an untidy looking, sturdy, chrome-based frame. We can’t help thinking that the chrome is going to be a bit fiddly and time-consuming to clean.

What’s more, if it does get dirty, the whole chair is going to look cheap. It’s all a bit 80s and 90s. We think a black finish would have been better.

It may be old school but it has most features…

The seat frame is covered in a breathable mesh fabric that should help you keep nice and cool. The back of the chair can be adjusted to fit your body contours and the lumbar support can also be adjusted for height. Unfortunately, it can’t be adjusted for depth. This is just about the only feature it doesn’t have.

The Ergohuman High Back Swivel Chair can be adjusted for height, tilt and tilt tension. We’re pleased to see that the seat can also be changed for seat depth. This is a feature so often lacking and so important in helping to set the best sitting position.

A missed opportunity in our book…

The armrests are another area where we think the Ergohuman High Back Swivel Chair could have done better. They can be moved up and down but unfortunately, they can’t be angled in our out. It’s a simple enough feature to incorporate into the design.

The chair seat is suspended on a frame and although it’s not as well-padded as a lot of seats, it’s both breathable and comfortable. The seat has quite an aggressive waterfall-style design on the edge of the seat. We found it to be comfortable but it might not be for everyone.

Eco-friendly is always impressive for us…

Finally, we want to finish by applauding the chair’s eco-credentials. It’s something that’s often overlooked but we have to praise the fact that the chair is made from 97% recyclable materials. There’s no doubt about it, that should get Greta Thunberg smiling. Err… actually, probably not!

Ergohuman High Back Swivel Chair with Headrest, Black Mesh & Chrome Base

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Strong frame.
  • Adjustable for seat depth.
  • Breathable mesh fabric back and seat.
  • Made from 97% recyclable materials.

Cons

  • Lumbar support cannot be adjusted for depth.
  • Armrests cannot be adjusted for an angle.

10 Ergonomic Office Chair Desk Chair Mesh Computer Chair with Lumbar Support Flip Up Arms Swivel Rolling Adjustable Mid Back Computer Chair for Women Men Adults,Black

This is a basic low-back office chair.

The chair offers fair value and some basic levels of comfort but we don’t think it’s the most suitable for people experiencing back pain.

Let us explain why adjustability is important…

Other than the usual height, tilt and tilt tension the chair has very little in the way of adjustability. It does have the ability to fold the armrest away and it also has lumbar support. However, both of these are quite basic and don’t function as well as they might.

The armrests will fold upwards but unfortunately, they don’t fold completely out of the way. So near and yet so far! Also, the armrests cannot be adjusted for either height or angle.

The lumbar support can only be moved for height and not depth. Additionally, the amount of height adjustability is quite small. This makes the lumbar support only suitable for shorter people. The lumbar support, for many people, could prove more of a hindrance than a help.

Also, the lumbar support feels like it sticks out too far into your back. Maybe perfect for some people, though certainly not for all.

The bottom line is that the design and execution of the armrests and the lumbar support is poor.

And what’s with the foam cushion?

The seat of the chair is made from a thick high-density foam cushion. In theory, this should be comfortable. In practice, it contains a lot of air and can quickly bottom out (sorry!) for heavier users.

More positively the rear of the chair has a breathable mesh fabric. It’s not the most supportive but considering the price, it does a reasonable job.

On another positive note, the chair also comes in a nice selection of five colors. You shouldn’t have too much problem finding a chair to suit your office décor. We like the blue and pink ones.

If you want a budget office chair, we think this is a reasonable choice. If you have back pain and need a supportive chair, we suggest you dig deeper into your wallet and look again.

Ergonomic Office Chair Desk Chair Mesh Computer Chair

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Inexpensive.
  • Breathable mesh fabric.
  • Good choice of colors.

Cons

  • Lumbar support is poor.
  • Lacks adjustability.

A Buying Guide For The Best Ergonomic Office Chairs For Back Pain

If you have back pain you probably already know that sitting is one of the worst things you can do for your back. Sitting places much more pressure on your back than either standing or lying down. It’s something to be avoided if you can.

Here’s what you can do…

For those who can’t avoid spending a lot of time at a desk, there are a few things you can do to help minimize back pain.

In any one hour, you should try to get up and move around for a least 5 or 10 minutes. More if you can. If possible, you should also consider trying a standing desk. You can buy a fold away desk converter or a dedicated standing desk.

Either way, standing desks don’t need to cost a fortune and they are proven to reduce the incidence of back pain. Standing desks can also help to reduce weight and a staggering array of diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

Then, of course, you could look to buy a well-designed and well-made ergonomic chair. Something specifically designed to keep your back and spine in the best possible shape. After all, that’s why you’re here, right?

So, what should you specifically look for when you’re shopping for an ergonomic office chair?

Here are 6 pointers we think will help.

  • Seat Back

The best ergonomic office chairs for back pain will have been designed to closely contour the shape of your back and spine. Most ergonomically-made office chairs are constructed from a fabric mesh that’s attached to a strong frame.

The best high-quality seatback designs will not only help your body to conform to the rear of the chair but will also move to mimic the micro-adjustments you naturally make as you’re sitting in your seat.

The seatback along with the seat, are the foundations to ensure you get the best seated position possible.

  • Seat

The amount of cushioning on the seat plays an important role in overall comfort. If you get too much cushioning it can strain your hamstrings. If there’s too little it can result in back pain and a sore backside.

Along with the amount of cushioning, the amount of support under the seat is just as crucial. Modern office chairs tend to have a supportive structure underneath the seat. More traditional office chairs don’t have this and are likely to be less comfortable.

Look for depth adjustability, especially if you’re tall…

Wherever possible a seat should be able to be adjusted for depth. A properly adjusted seat will ensure your legs are adequately supported. This is even more important for taller people who frequently have to put up with inadequate support at the back of their legs.

One more thing to look for in a seat is the angle at the edge. A waterfall seat with a sloping edge is often more comfortable than just a standard flat seat.

  • Adjustability

The more adjustable the better.

Most office chairs can be adjusted for height, tilt, and tilt tension. Most will also be able to swivel through 360 degrees. However, the best and most comfortable chairs can do so much more. They can adjust in so many different ways.

So, let’s take a look at the kinds of adjustability you can expect from a well-made office chair.

  • Armrests

The armrests should at least have the ability to be moved up and down for adjustable height. Armrests that don’t move at all can be annoying and even downright uncomfortable. Ideally, the armrests should also be adjustable for angle and able to be folded away or completely removed.

  • Lumbar Support

Lumbar support shouldn’t be fixed.

The problem with chairs that provide fixed lumbar support is that they can be good for some people but torture devices for others. It’s important to have a chair that has a moveable lumbar support feature.

Ideally, lumbar support should be able to be adjusted for both height and depth.

  • Headrest

If the chair you’re considering has a headrest make sure it can be moved up or down, angled, or preferably also be moved for depth. Where a headrest can’t be moved for depth, there’s the possibility it will push the head too far forward into an unnatural or uncomfortable position.

A fully removable headrest is always a good option. Just make sure that the chair doesn’t look odd when it’s removed.

  • Materials

We favor a mesh fabric for the seat back and seat cover. This is because it’s breathable, so cooler, and also because it has the greatest ability to naturally contour to your body. This makes a mesh-covered chair the most likely to give you a comfortable sitting experience.

For these reasons, mesh fabric is the most popular material for office chairs.

Leather would be our second choice as it is hard-wearing, has breathable properties, and also to an extent will contour to your body’s movements. Since it’s relatively expensive it’s not as popular a choice as mesh fabric.

Stay away from fake leather…

Budget chairs often have a PU leather or leather substitute material. These materials don’t breathe at all and are not particularly hard-wearing. They are OK for a budget chair that’s not used for prolonged periods.

However, if you’re looking or an office chair to use every day, we’d advise you to look at a mesh-covered chair instead.
