1 Asus ROG G703 – Best Looking GTX 1080 Laptop

Not many laptops are as big as the Asus ROG G703. This absolute beast of a laptop was designed to handle the latest games. Asus didn´t seem too concerned about weight or thickness, rather the opposite. The G703 is one of the heaviest and bulkiest laptops we have ever tested.

Very expensive…

The G703 costs a lot more than many of its rivals, so the question is… is it worth the money? To be honest, yes. It is one of the best laptops we have tested, and it also has one of the most rock-solid performances of any Asus gaming laptops. But it isn´t perfect…

There is no question about the power that this machine possesses, but its biggest rival is the Alienware 17 R5, which comes with a lot more options.

A great looking gaming laptop…

The G703 looks amazing and is designed from a mixture of machined, gunmetal aluminum and matte black plastic. The keyboard has RGB LED lights, and the illuminated ROG logo on the top of the laptop is also illuminated. The back of the laptop has a finish of burnt orange metal to make it even more appealing.

The G703 gaming laptop combines its awesome looks with a formidable size. It is 50mm thick, so compared to the Alienware, it is almost 2 cm thicker. This heavyweight weighs in at 4.8kg, so you might want to have a robust backpack if you are headed to a LAN with it.

Not just great build quality…

The connectivity on this beast is excellent. There are four USB 3.1 connectors, one USB type C, a mini-DisplayPort, HDMI, and Thunderbolt. It has a card reader and is has killer-branded networking inside, and it even has an Xbox wireless receiver.

Our verdict…

Not many GTX 1080 gaming laptops can beat the G703 for speed or quality, but the price is a bit scary, and the laptop is very big. Non the less it is one of our favorite GTX 1080 laptops and is highly recommended for the competitive gamer.

Asus ROG G703

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Superb performance.
  • Amazing design.
  • Good keyboard and screen.

Cons

  • Heavy and thick design.
  • Poor battery life.
  • Very expensive.

2 Acer Predator Triton 700 – Best Ultra Thin GTX 1080 Laptop

The Acer Predator Triton 700 has incredible power, almost a ridiculous amount, fitted into an ultra-thin shell. This takes some impressive engineering to pull off, but the price tag is almost as high as the power on this impressive GTX 1080 gaming laptop, and unfortunately, it has a few issues.

Engineering at its best…

Acer has managed to impress with some real engineering genius to the new Predator Triton 700. This is an Ultra-slim gaming laptop, and while other slim gaming laptops often opt out at a 1060 graphics card, the Triton 700 has a top of the line GTX 1080.

In the world of gaming, this is pretty significant. We also loved the low-profile mechanical keyboard, which feels like a mix between the ordinary notebook keys and the standalone mechanical keyboards. The keys are also super responsive and RGB backlit.

And at its worst…

Most gaming laptop manufacturers, well laptop manufacturers in general, think they can crack the touchpad code, but so far, none have succeeded. The touchpad is best placed below the keys, in the center, and close to the user. However, for some reason, Acer thought it would be a good idea to place it above the keys instead.

We have seen this error before on the Predator 21X and the MSI GT83VR. Just let us be clear, this never works. The touchpads are where they are for a good reason; it is generally the best place for them, don´t mess with something that works. The only exception may be the Razer Pro Blade 17.

With that said, the touchpad looks really cool, made out of glass so that you can see some of the internal components, but it is hard to reach and feels uncomfortable when you use it, and it also gets extremely hot during loading.

Comes with a headset to give you the ultimate sound…

The headset, which is included, gives you the best audio you could ever have want (almost) and features Dolby Atmos, so you can hear and experience sounds from all different directions. If you are not used to a headset, you can still experience high-quality audio with this gaming laptop.

Our favorite features…

PredatorSence is a feature that allows you to take ultimate control over your games. You can customize the over lighting, fans speed, overclocking, and more, anyway you like, to truly get the most out of your gaming experience.

Another hot feature is the Killer DoubleShot Pro. This allows you to actually choose the applications that can use your bandwidth. It also allows you to use both wired and wireless connections at the same time.

Our verdict…

The Triton 700 is ridiculously powerful and yet impressively thin. It can tackle everything you throw at it. However, it gets so incredibly hot during loading that it is almost too hot to touch, and it does lack some features that other competitors offer at a lower price.

Acer Predator Triton 700

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Powerful GTX 1080 graphics.
  • 32GB of RAM.
  • Impressively thin.
  • Mechanical keyboard.

Cons

  • Extremely hot under load.
  • Excessive fan noise.
  • No card reader.
  • Poor battery life.

3 ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501- Best Ultra Thin Powerhouse GTX 1080 Laptops

In the past, there were only two kinds of gaming laptops. The big powerful ones and the ones that were thin and portable enough that they could easily fit in your backpack; however, neither of them were very quiet while playing games or very powerful.

This was until the ASUS ROG Zephyrus saw the light of day. The Zephyrus GX501 sits comfortably at the top in the new generation of gaming laptops. It offers both extensive power and is almost as thin as your average notebook. It might sound impossible, but Asus have pulled it off with this, which is easily one of the best GTX 1080 laptops available.

Poor battery life…

The extreme power that this machine possesses does compromise on the battery life. However, the Zephyrus GX501 is still head of its class with a cool design, color-rich display, amazing speakers, and an out of this world gaming experience.

Very expensive…

The high performance and amazing gaming experience comes at a price, a very high price. This is more than we would normally spend on a 15-inch gaming laptop, but it comes with a Nvidia GTX 1080 and Intel Core i7 processor. Also, keep in mind that it is a bit cheaper than its main rival, the Acer Predator Triton 700.

Asus pulled off the impossible…

Yes, they managed to do something that we thought couldn´t be done, to stuff a GTX 1080 Graphics card into a 1.79cm (0,7 inch) gaming laptop. It is not only thin for an ordinary notebook, but it is slimmer than most traditional laptops, including the compact Dell XPS 15.

And to cool such a powerhouse, Asus came up with a truly innovative design. The bottom panel drops down like a ramp for better airflow creating a 6mm gap. The ramp automatically drops down when you open the laptop. 6mm might not sound much, but Asus created a high-air chamber, which gives the Zephyrus GX501 the same cooling abilities as a much thicker laptop.

Our verdict…

The Zephyrus looks like a futuristic gaming laptop, and we love the truly innovative design. It also sets a very high bar for powerful, ultra-thin gaming laptops that focuses on performance. Simply one of the best GTX 1080 gaming laptops available.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501

Our rating:3.6 out of 5 stars (3.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Astonishingly powerful.
  • Innovative and quiet cooling.
  • Sharp, futuristic aesthetics.
  • Excellent display and speakers.
  • Amazing design.

Cons

  • Laughable battery life.
  • Poor keyboard ergonomics.
  • No SD card slot.

4 MSI GT63 TITAN-046 – Best Gaming GTX 1080 Laptop

The MSI GT63 is a very powerful gaming laptop. Its design is similar to other “standard” MSI gaming laptops, but this is no ordinary MSI gaming laptop. Equipped with a Coffee Lake i7 8-gen processor that provides maximum power, this is one of our top picks for the best GTX 1080 gaming laptops. Plus, stunning visuals make it easy for every gamer to enjoy this laptop.

Picture perfect…

The GT63 includes a 15.6-inch full HD picture perfect display with G-sync, which takes this machine to new heights. A Cooler-Boost cooling solution, True color, TriDef VR, and the MSI SHIFT dynamic balancing, plus a number of communication ports and massive storage, makes this gaming laptop a true winner.

The new MSI SHIFT technology…

The MSI SHIFT helps minimize both the temperature and the noise to give its users unmatched gaming experience. If you want even more power, there are four different options – Sport, Turbo, Comfort, and ECO to give you an added advantage. The earlier mentioned Cooler Boost with dual fans, and eight heating pipes helps to get rid of any extra heating that may occur.

Connections, a concern of the past…

You never have to worry about the connectivity with all the options for both wired and wireless connections. Apart from the Killer Ethernet controller and Killer wireless- AC, you have Bluetooth, a USB 3.1Type-C. USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and HDMI ports available to cover all bases.

Amazing graphics and audio…

The 15.6-inch full HD screen displays amazing images thanks to the GTX 1080 graphic card. To top this off, you also get a 120Hz refresh rate and a 94% Anti-Glare Wide viewing angle to impress even further. Sorry if we are getting too technical, but you need to understand the unique power of this incredible gaming laptop.

The audio is powered by Nahimic 3, which provides you with next-level audio with 3D surround sound and offers you more control over your games, music, and video.

Our verdict…

The MSI GT63 Titan is a very powerful gaming laptop with a comfortable keyboard. The only thing we can complain about is the dull and quite tiresome design that we see on most MSI gaming laptops. The touchpad could also use a bit of improvement as well. Otherwise, a great gaming laptop and one of our top picks.

MSI GT63 TITAN-046

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Pros

  • Strong performance.
  • Comfortable keyboard.
  • Extra SODIMM slots for RAM upgrades.

Cons

  • Tired design.
  • Touchpad doesn’t work well with all Windows gestures.
  • Display could be brighter.

5 MSI GT75 Titan 4K – Best High End GTX 1080 Laptop

The MSI GT75 Titan puts even some of the best gaming PCs in their place. We haven’t seen anything this gaming laptop can´t handle. With a Core i9 8-gen processor, 32GB of RAM, and the GTX 1080 graphics card, it will handle all the games you can think of without losing any performance. Only one thing stands in the way; you need money and a lot of it.

This is one of the most expensive laptops on the market, but if you don´t want to compromise and have the spare cash, you are not going to get much better gaming laptops than this. In fact, it is one of the best laptops we have ever tested.

Finally, a design from MSI that rocks…

Luckily the GT75 defies all the latest MSI trends when it comes to design. This gaming laptop is a long way from the designs we are used to seeing from MSI, and it reminds us of a tank, which it kind of is. It is big, thick, and heavy and is not something you would carry around in public unless you are headed to a tournament. No, this Titan belongs at home, sitting on a desk.

Packed with RGB-lighting, the GT75 Titan will not blend into the background. It demands your attention and can sometimes be a bit annoying, to be honest. So, it’s a very good thing that you can turn off the lights, but there is still the annoying sound of the loud fans that you have to deal with.

The best keyboard we have tested…

The keyboard is just as sweet as the rest of this gaming laptop. A perfectly fitted mechanical keyboard from SteelSeries is simply impressive, and we have never used a keyboard on a gaming laptop that felt this good. You will, however, want to use a standalone mouse as with any gaming keyboard, just to enhance your gaming experience.

The special keys on the keyboard let you control everything from fan speed to lighting profiles, you could control this with software as well, but it’s way easier to just hit a button.

Again, with the touchpad… sorry, trackpad

MSI decided to use a trackpad, and it is something we have to mention. The target audience will not be using the trackpad, but it just does not match the quality of the rest of this gaming beast. The trackpad is accurate and works fine; it is just too small. We highly recommend that you get a good gaming mouse to complete your gaming experience, which will, of course, add to the cost of this already pricy machine.

Connect any accessory under the sun…

There is a ton of ports to choose from on this bad boy, five USB-A ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port, one HDMI, one Mini DisplayPort, two line out, and two line in ports. And we still haven’t mentioned the standard LAN and SD card reader. You can connect any accessory you can think of with all these ports, and this only makes this gaming laptop even more compelling as a replacement for your gaming PC.

They implemented a subwoofer…

It would break our hearts if the sound and the display were not up to standards with the rest of the GT75 Titan, and luckily, they are. The sound might actually be one of the best implementations we have seen so far. The sound is rich, full, and truly enjoyable, thanks to the subwoofer; yes, you heard it right, this laptop is so big that it actually has a built-in sub.

It is awesome to both play games and watch movies on this laptop, thanks to the incredible sound.

And then there is the display, and boy is it beautiful. MSI went all in to make sure that the display is as good as it gets. It is nice and bright, and the colors really pop. The G-sync makes gameplay smooth and silky even at 4k. Having a laptop with a built-in 4k G-sync panel is just as luxurious as it sounds, which is part of the mighty price tag.

Our verdict…

The MSI GT75 is a powerful, clumsy gaming laptop that plays and performs like an absolute dream. The only downside is the weight and size, which makes it hard to carry around. But anyone who wants a gaming laptop with the highest performance and doesn’t mind having a monster to drag around simply must have a look at this gaming laptop. It doesn’t get much better than this.

MSI GT75 Titan 4K

Our rating:5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Pros

  • Extreme Intel Core i9 performance.
  • Superior mechanical keyboard.
  • 120Hz monitor.
  • Excellent graphics performance.

Cons

  • HDD only on entry-level models.
  • Runs hot under load.
  • Little to no battery life.

6 New Alienware 17 R5 Supreme – Best Premium GTX 1080 Laptop

Next, in our Best GTX 1080 Laptops review, when Alienware designed the new high-end 17 R5 Supreme, they spared nothing. The Core i9-8950HK packs enough power to scare anyone who stares it directly in the face. Overclockable to 5 GHz, it makes other gaming laptops pale in comparison.

The powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080…

The already powerful graphics card comes overclocked and ready to kick ass right out of the box. However, you can still use Alienware’s command center to adjust the tuning of both your CPU and GPU. You can also create your own profile in the command center as well as use the one-click overclock options.

Or why not tweak the thermal parameters to your liking. If you use Alienware´s app, you can adjust the laptops’ RGB lighting features, and it even acts as a central hub for all your installed games, which is pretty awesome.

It doesn´t come cheap…

The 17 R5 Supreme is loaded with features and power, but it comes with a hefty price tag. This is the most expensive gaming laptop we have tested, and there is a reason for that. It is just incredible in every aspect.

Big, but attractive…

Like the Asus ROG G703 and the MSI GT75 Titan, this is a big laptop, weighing in at 10 pounds. The design looks like a rip-off of the Alienware 17, not that that is a bad thing – it looks great. The black colors look both professional and flashy.

RGB LED strips are attached to both sides and to the touchpad itself, a very helpful detail if you are sitting in a dark room or lying in bed at night. The keypad is backlit, but it is zone-lit rather than per-key lit, which is a bit of a shame, but the keyboard itself feels amazing with a good response. The touchpad is just as good and has a pair of buttons at the bottom.

Better than the predecessor…

The 17 R5 Supreme delivers an amazing sound for a gaming laptop, and unlike its predecessor, the audio is not drowned out by the loud fans. The fans are not quiet, not at all, but they are not as noisy as its predecessor and have a reasonably pleasant noise that is not too high-pitched or whiny.

The display of this laptop is amazing, and it is difficult to tell that it is actually a TN panel. The screen has clear imagery with generous viewing angles, but it starts to darken when you reach more extreme angles. We were impressed by the 390 nits the screen hits at full brightness, and playing on a 120Hz G-sync panel, is just a glorious and satisfying as you would expect.

Our verdict…

One of the top gaming laptops on the market but also the most expensive. The cooling vents on the back are really ugly, and since all ports and even the power cord is attached on the back, you might, on occasion, accidentally touch the very hot vents while trying to connect. If your budget allows it, this gaming laptop is well worth your money if you’re after power, performance, and an extraordinary gaming experience.

New Alienware 17 R5 Supreme

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Incredible desktop-class performance.
  • Overclockable CPU and GPU.
  • Gorgeous industrial design.
  • Decent battery life for a desktop replacement.

Cons

  • Large and heavy.
  • Annoying hinge/vent design.
  • Not available without Tobii eye-tracking.
  • Extremely expensive.

7 Alienware 17R5 FHD

Not much sets the Alienware 17R5 apart from the 17R5 Supreme. They both have the same i9 8th gen processor and a lot of similar components. But there are some differences, one being the price and the second being the SSD. The 17R5 has a 256GB SSD, while the 17R5 Supreme comes with a 512GB SSD.

The Differences

Price…

The price is almost half of the Supreme, which in many cases could be a key factor when buying a gaming laptop. But you don’t get as much machine for your money. And, the display is the biggest loser.

This comes with an FHD display, which is a full HD 1920 x 1080p, while the supreme has a QHD display of 2560 x 1440. A 1920 x 1080 resolution is very disappointing on a laptop made for gaming and should be avoided.

These are the main differences between the 17R5 FHD and the 17R5 Supreme. The rest is basically the same on both machines.

Our verdict…

The Alienware 17R5 FHD costs a lot less than the Supreme version, but you always get what you pay for, and it is hard to recommend a gaming laptop with an FHD display when there are so many better options available for the same price. However, you can get the same laptop with a QHD display if you are willing to pay more.

Alienware 17R5 FHD

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Incredible performance.
  • Overclockable CPU and GPU.
  • Nice industrial design.
  • Decent battery life for a desktop replacement.
  • Far better priced than the Supreme, but not as good.

Cons

  • Large and heavy.
  • Inferior screen and smaller SSD to the more expensive Supreme.

8 Razer Blade Pro 17 – Most Portable GTX 1080 Laptop

There has always been a pretty clear border between the gaming laptop and desktop replacement laptops. The difference usually being that the replacement desktop laptop is too big and bulky to carry around.

Bye-bye desktop…

Well, the Razer Blade Pro is here to prove that a thin and light laptop can indeed have the same power as a desktop. Equipped with the Intel Core i7 and the GTX 1080 graphics card, all hidden inside a 0.88-inch frame, this shows that it can be done.

The Blade Pro 17 is an awesome gaming machine that can replace any gaming PC. Although it is very expensive, it is one of the best GTX 1080 laptops available.

Lighter is better…

After carrying around the slimmed-down Alienware 17 that weighs in at 4.42 kilo, and is almost half an inch thicker than the Razer Blade Pro 17, it was a great relief, and the weight literally lifted off our shoulders when we exchanged it for the Blade Pro.

That trackpad again…

Once you open the laptop, you will find a keyboard layout, unlike any laptop you have seen before. Instead of positioning it where you expect to find it, in the middle under the keypad, Razer positioned it to the right of the keypad. We found ourselves touching the surface under the keypad more than once.

In all fairness, it doesn´t take long to get used to having the trackpad there. In fact, it took just about an hour of intense gaming to get used to the new placement. It turns out once we are used to the placement, it is one of the best trackpads we have used.

And the keyboard…

It looks a lot like a standard laptop keyboard, but once you start clicking away on the keys, you will hear that sweet sound of a mechanical switch. This is the first time Razer has equipped their Ultra-Low-Profile mechanical switches on a laptop.

The keyboard has that nice mechanical sound when you press the keys, and it feels just like a standalone mechanical keyboard. MSI might have been the first to ever implement a mechanical keyboard onto a laptop, but Razer’s solution is better, takes less space, and is designed for a laptop.

Pixel perfect display…

One of the most impressive features on the Razer Blade Pro 17 is the 17.3-inch IGZO display, which not only has a 4K resolution but also supports 100% of the Adobe RGB spectrum, multitouch control, and Nvidia´s G-Sync.

Few laptops come with a more full-featured screen, and the colors and pitch-black levels speak for themselves.

Our verdict…

The Razer Blade Pro is equipped with one of the best displays and keyboards. Which makes it one of the best gaming laptops available, if not the best? The price is reasonable, it can be a little off-putting for some, but it is well worth it. A small compact easy to carry powerhouse like this is easy to take where ever you go, which makes it a perfect portable gaming laptop.

Razer Blade Pro 17

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Fully loaded hardware.
  • First truly mechanical ‘laptop keyboard.’
  • Starboard trackpad placement.
  • A desktop experience you can finally carry.

Cons

  • Off-putting price.
  • Less than 5 hours of battery life.

Best GTX 1080 Laptops Buying Guide

Regular PCs and gaming laptops are much more different than you might think, and they use different components, different graphics, etc.

The biggest difference may be the price; gaming laptops are often more costly, so it is always better to know what you want and can afford beforehand.

It is important to know which factors to consider before you buy your new gaming laptop. Here are some tips that will help you make a decision.

  • You shouldn´t buy a gaming laptop with an integrated graphics card for playing games.
  • Touch screens may seem fancy, but they drain the battery and are often more expensive.
  • 13, 14- and 15-inch laptops are often more portable than the 17- and 18-inch laptops, but the 17- and 18-inch laptops are more powerful.
  • The keyboard needs to be comfortable.
  • Avoid gaming laptops using 1920 x 1080 resolution displays.

How Important Is Portability?

All gaming laptops have different levels of portability, so ask yourself if you will leave it at home or carry it around a lot. A key factor is that the more powerful the laptop, the less portable it will be.

17-18-inch laptops usually offer minimal portability, and they are more suited to stay at home on your desk. Laptops of these sizes are extremely powerful; they are also usually very power hungry and can´t stay unplugged for very long.

15-inch laptops offer medium portability, you can carry them around quite easily, and they usually last 5-6 hours after they have been fully charged.

Which Graphics Card Is Better?

The most important component for a gaming laptop is the graphics card or GPU. You need a good graphics card to make sure that your gaming runs smoothly, and you also want a discrete GPU with VRAM.

The best option for a gaming laptop is one that comes with a GTX 1080 GPU. You can play high-end games as well as edit videos, and it supports special effects and has an outstanding resolution.

Some tips when choosing your CPU and RAM…

  • Choose a processor with at least a 6 gen Core.
  • If you buy a Core i7 processor, buy quad-core, it is a lot better than dual-core.
  • Check the clock speed; higher numbers mean more speed.
  • A gaming laptop needs 8GB of RAM; however, a fast CPU is more important than having 16GB or 32GB of RAM.

Storage

Gaming laptops need to be fast, so one of the best options is to buy an SSD if the laptop doesn’t already include one. If you can´t afford an SSD, make sure you get at least a 1TB hard drive.

With both a hard drive and an SSD, you can load games and important files to the SSD and still have plenty of space left for everything else.

The winner in our review of the Best GTX 1080 laptop is the…

MSI GT75 Titan 4K

It gives you the best gaming experience of all the laptops we tested.

Frankly, it is just unbeatable in every aspect. Yes, it is big and very pricy, but it comes with both an SSD and a 1TB hard drive, a Core i9 processor, and a 4k display. The sound is amazing, and you can connect anything you want with all the ports available.

And don’t forget the keyboard, it is by far the best keyboard we tested. MSI truly went over and beyond on this gaming laptop.

Happy gaming.
