1 CZUR ET16 Plus Book Large Format Scanner – Best Value Large Format Scanner for the Money

The ET16 is one of the best large format flatbed scanners there is! Professionals in the paper industry designed it. The features are highly innovative and high-quality. No wonder it places at the top of the large format scanners.

Incredible speed…

One of the prominent features is that it scans with 1.5 S/P. A 300-page book takes just under 10 minutes, which is very impressive. We haven’t found any other scanner that can match that speed yet. It’s so fast because it uses an Auto-Scan technology, which only requires you to flip the pages. To get started, all you have to do is press down the foot pedal, which of course, comes with the scanner.

The CZUR uses three lasers. These are simple laser lines that calculate the materials’ age curve in the book you are scanning, contours of the document or paper, and a flattened page’s output. You can even scan physical objects with it. Since it scans both A3 and A4 paper sizes, you can use it for magazines, catalogs, exam papers, or large books.

What makes it stand out?

The supplementary lighting system is what makes the CZUR stand out from the competition. It also scans all types of glossy paper by using the side lights instead of the overhead light.

To get an even more realistic output, you can edit all scanned materials, checking the contrast, sharpness, and other features. It converts any scanned material into TIFF, Word, or PDF files.

Our Verdict

It is one of the best scanners for large formats on the market. It’s perfect for artists and professionals that want to scan large documents or glossy papers. It’s easy to use, and the three laser lines make it very accurate. And it has an incredible scan speed.

CZUR ET16 Plus Book Large Format Scanner

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • OCR accuracy is excellent.
  • Large input capacity.
  • Solid and robust.

Cons

  • Searchable PDFs are saved pretty slow.
  • No battery.
  • Higher substance than other scanners.

2 Epson DS-50000 Large-Format Document Scanner – Best Large Format Scanner for Artists

The DS-50000 is a great scanner that offers quality, flexibility, and productivity. It scans everything from business cards to large 11.7 x 17-inch documents. The scanner uses a 4-line CCD sensor that produces crisp, sharp text and accurate, intense colors. And it’s capable of scanning numerous documents simultaneously.

Upload directly to cloud services…

The included software allows you to upload all scans directly to popular cloud services like Evernote, SharePoint, Google Docs, and more. It also uses both TWAIN and ISIS drivers for excellent cross-compatibility. The Network Scan Module enables wireless functionality, which lets you scan remotely.

The DS-50000 creates searchable documents, and you can extract text from them. If you have a lot of scans stored, you can search by content.

Thanks to the 4-line CCD that we mentioned earlier, the scan quality is good, which makes it ideal for artists. It feels solid and will last a long time. The design is elegant, and considering its immense format scanning abilities, it still feels compact. It will fit most workspaces. The resolution could be better, but the 600 x 600 dpi is enough to cover most needs.

The DS-50000 offers great productivity…

As mentioned, the DS-50000 has good productivity as well. A one-touch scanning option allows you to create 30 user-programmable jobs. And it comes with a lot of included software for enhanced features.

Our verdict

DS-50000 is the right choice if you have many large-format documents to scan. The build quality is excellent, and it will last for years. Since it scans at 600dpi, you can’t expect professional-grade results, but the image quality is still good.

There are better choices if you scan graphical content, but otherwise, this is a good choice. It doesn’t have an automatic document feeder, which was a big letdown, especially considering its price.

Epson DS-50000 Large-Format Document Scanner

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Create custom profiles for repeated tasks.
  • Easy to upload to cloud services.
  • Wider formats.
  • Excellent build quality.
  • Great quality for text documents.

Cons

  • Not the best resolution.
  • No automatic document feeder.

3 Epson Expression 12000XL-PH Flatbed Scanner – Best Premium Large Format Scanner

The Expression 12000XL-PH is one of the best scanners from Epson. There are professional scanners, and then you have the Epson 12000XL-PH. It’s designed explicitly for graphic enthusiasts. This scanner uses MatrixCCD technology to produce stunning, large-format scans with incredible detail and quality. You can scan documents up to 12.2 x 17.2-inches. It even scans negatives, slides, and transparency strips.

Stunning resolution…

The maximum resolution is 2400 x 4800dpi, and just to top things off, it has a 3.8 Dmax for excellent clarity and detail. It’s also user-friendly, and the setup is easy and doesn’t take long. Faded color photos or negatives are restored with the Easy Photo Fix®, a one-touch restoration technology. It also removes dust and reduces grainy images.

The high-performance Transparency Unit is for slides and negatives. Professional photographers use it to produce professional photo scans that capture and reproduce great details. Batch scanning allows you to scan multiple printed images at a time. Build quality is reliable, and the scanner will last. It’s not enormous, but you might want to clear some space for it. It looks nice and fits in almost any office setting.

Our verdict

The Expression 12000XL-PH is for photographers and other graphic professionals. The resolution is outstanding, and it’s capable of large-size scanning. It works great for scanning slides and negatives. The one-touch restoration works well to bring your old photos back to life. The batch scanning feature allows you to scan many documents or pictures.

All-in-all it’s a great scanner, but comes delivered with a hefty price-tag.

Epson Expression 12000XL-PH Flatbed Scanner

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Top-class build quality.
  • Scans slides, negatives, and transparency strips.
  • Incredible scan-quality.
  • One-touch photo restoration.
  • Batch scanning.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • No Ethernet functionality.

4 HP ScanJet Pro 2500 f1 – Best Budget Large Format Scanner

If you want to buy a decent large-format scanner for a low price, the Scanjet Pro 2500 f1 might be right up your alley. Honestly, you can’t expect much from it, but it gets the job done. It will fit well at work or in your home and blends in nicely with other gear.

It’s very user-friendly and executes routine jobs and large-format scanning with ease. The settings include options for frequent scan jobs. The software also makes it quick and easy to share your scans to different cloud destinations.

Resolution and features…

The resolution is 1200dpi, which is decent for a scanner at this price. And some great software is included. The image quality is good for scanning documents, and it does, in some cases, enhance the quality of your scanned photos. It supports various paper sizes like letter, legal, business cards, and handles documents up to 122-inches. It also saves your scans in many different file formats. PDF, Jpeg, Png, TIFF, BMP, and RTF, to name a few.

One feature that was missing on the DS-50000 was the automatic document feeder. Well, the Pro 2500 f1 has one. It’s a 50-sheet automatic feeder that lets you scan unattended. Just add a few sheets and drink your coffee while the scanner does the work.

Decent speed but a nice design…

The scanning speed is decent. It can scan documents at 20 pages/min and 40 images/min. It uses single-pass, 2-sided scanning.

The build quality is good, and the scanner itself looks nice. It may not be a sturdy as the more expensive scanners, but what can you expect? It will still stay by your side for many years.

Our verdict

It’s not often that you stumble upon an affordable flatbed scanner. The 2500 f1 is one of the most affordable large format scanners we have seen. And it’s decent as well. It might work better at home than in an office, but if your only requirement is to scan large documents, you won’t be disappointed. Image scanning isn’t the best, but you can’t complain, considering its price.

HP ScanJet Pro 2500 f1

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Automatic feeder.
  • OK scan speeds.
  • OCR support.
  • Great software.
  • Great price.

Cons

  • Software is limited on Mac.
  • Not good at glossy photos.
  • Paper feeder jams quite a bit.

5 Epson Perfection V850 Pro – Best Mid Range Large Format Scanner

The Perfection V850 Pro is one of Epson’s most affordable and power-packed scanners. What makes the Perfection V850 so good is the dual-lens system. It automatically switches its lens to match whatever media you are scanning for maximum output quality. The v850 Pro has two sets of high-quality film holders, which scan up to 6400dpi. The optical scan uses 4800dpi and is primarily for scanning photos.

Some very nifty features…

The Digital ICE technology is a nifty feature that restores old films and photos to bring them back to their original look. It removes imperfections, dust fingerprints, and even scratches from films and photos. And the 4.0 Dmax optical density offers excellent tone reproduction. The V850 provides a lot more value than other Epson scanners, and it’s an ideal large-format flatbed scanner.

Another great thing is that you can start using it almost immediately. It warms up in seconds, compared to many other flatbed scanners.

Our verdict

The V850 Pro is an excellent large-format scanner, especially if you are mainly going to use it for photos and images. It will bring back your old photos and films, and it’s packed with useful features. The scan-quality of photos excels with the 6400dpi. But this is limited to scanning documents of 8 x 10 inches. If you scan bigger documents, it won’t perform as well.

Epson Perfection V850 Pro

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Multiple software included.
  • Good price
  • 6400 dpi for photo scanning.
  • Good dynamic range.
  • Dual lens.

Cons

  • The SilverFast software is overrated.
  • Lower dpi on documents larger than 8 x 10 inches.

6 Plustek A3 Flatbed Scanner OS 1180 – Best-Rated Large Format Scanner

The Plustek OS 1180 is good for two things, artwork and book scanning. But the primary use is book scanning. After scanning a book, it will store it automatically as a PDF-file. Because of its large size, it’s easy to scan two side-by-side pages, which saves time. The scanner warms up almost immediately because of the LED light source. The light source is also one of its main features. The LED is very stable and ensures that every scan turns out great.

The speed is quite impressive as well. When set to 300 dpi, it takes about nine seconds to scan an A3 document in grayscale. Color scans are a bit slower, but still, 15 sec isn’t bad. It supports up to 1200 dpi, but scanning speeds will reduce at higher resolutions.

Perfect for schools, libraries, and offices…

We recommend this scanner for libraries, schools, and offices that don’t focus on graphic designs and artwork. It’s well suited for scanning artwork, but it’s much better for scanning large documents.

There are four main one-touch buttons, each with its own feature. There’s a scan button, one for PDFs, one for OCR, and one for email. These buttons make the scanner very user-friendly. Installation is also quick and easy.

Our verdict

The Plustek OpticSlim 1180 is a good scanner for offices, schools, libraries, or home use. The large format makes it easy to scan documents, and it does well when it comes to book scanning. The price is not too bad, and the quality is good all-around. Color scanning is a bit slower than grayscale, but that’s nothing to be concerned about. All in all, it’s a good price-worthy large format scanner.

Plustek A3 Flatbed Scanner OS 1180

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Great for books and large documents.
  • High-quality scans.
  • Great build quality.
  • Up to 1200dpi.

Cons

  • A little slow on higher resolutions.
  • Not the best for artwork.
  • A bit loud.
  • Heavy.

Best Large Format Scanner Buying Guide

CZUR ET16 Plus Advanced Book & Document Scanner, 2nd Gen Auto-Flatten&Deskew Tech, 16MP Sony Camera, Capture A3, 186 Languages OCR

The market is full of options for large format scanners, everything from small to large models, grayscale to color, different features, and different speeds. Some are designed for easy usage, and some are designed for high volume production. Why are there so many different types? Because every scanner is suited for different kinds of use.

Why Is Resolution Important?

The most important characteristic of a scanner is its resolution. The quality of your scanned documents or images will be proportional to the scanner’s resolution. So, if you are mostly going to scan artwork and graphical work, you will need a higher resolution scanner.

For example, most documents don’t require resolutions higher than 600 dpi, but if you want to scan something with high-leveled detail like a stamp, you want to buy a scanner with a resolution around 4,800 dpi. Make sure you know what you will scan before purchasing a scanner.

Scan Area

Another important feature that we urge you to consider is the Scan Area. There are two different types of scanners: the general-purpose and the special-purpose ones. If you plan on scanning books, objects, films, or negatives, you need a special-purpose scanner.

If you are more likely to scan documents like blueprints, exam papers, or simpler images, the general-purpose scanner will do just fine. Also, make sure that the scanner you choose can scan the size of the materials or objects you are looking to scan. There is no use in buying an A3 scanner if you only scan A1 and A2 documents.

Connectivity

Connectivity is also essential. You may want to connect the scanner to your computer or other devices because it gives you more ways to obtain scanning materials. Therefore, you want a scanner with good connectivity options. Some scanners have USB ports, and others allow you to connect to cloud sharing platforms and other software sharing solutions.

You should read the specifications of every scanner you are interested in to see what connections are available.
