The Wavlink AC1200 is an outdoor point-to-point CPE. It works exceptionally well for long-distance network solutions. Where it excels is for video surveillance and data transmission. The design is intriguing and looks like an insect with its four omnidirectional antennas. The antennas provide and maintain a stable signal.

We had no problems picking up the signal hundreds of yards away. We could both receive and send data at a reasonable rate with our smartphones. It features a 1000mW transmission, which enhances the signal and gives it extreme power. It also has a 15kV ESD lightning arrester, which keeps it safe even if lightning should strike. Since it’s an 802.11AC Dual-Band, it works on both the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz bands. We reached a top speed of 300Mbps on the 2.4Ghz, and an impressive 867Mbps on the 5Ghz, rates that are reasonable for most users.

Passive PoE support…

It’s very flexible when it comes to positioning because it has passive PoE support. The three LEDs indicate the signal strength, and you can reboot it remotely if needed. The security features are mediocre but get the job done as it supports both WAP and WPA2 encryptions. It works great for both home users and businesses.

  • Weatherproof

We hate to state the obvious, but your outdoor access point should be able to handle all types of weather. It should work even though exposed to rain, hailstorms, humidity, and most importantly, extreme temperatures. Many devices fail when exposed to cold temperatures, so make sure the one you choose can handle that.

You also want all ports and connections to be covered and protected from any humidity or water. And it has to be durable. It shouldn’t be damaged or broken if exposed to heavy hailstorms.

  • Signal Gain

Usually, the higher the signal gain you get, the better it is, but some will insist that a WAP with a lower signal is more beneficial. Why is this? A higher signal gain will send the signal further, but it will cover less of a total area. So, of course, a lower signal gain sends the signal a shorter distance but covers a broader area.

The antennas determine what kind of signal gain your device has. Some WAPs have omnidirectional antennas, while others have directional antennas. Omnidirectional will have a lower signal gain, and the directional will have a higher gain. If you only want to use your access point to cover your garden and surrounding areas, a lower gain will be better since the signal doesn’t have to cover massive distances.

  • Coverage

Coverage is close related to the signal gain and is, like we said, determined by what type of antennas the WAP uses. If the coverage area is within 400 feet, omnidirectional antennas are better, but any further than this, and some devices like smartphones can receive data but cannot return it.

If you need a point-to-point setup, you should choose the directional antennas that can send and receive data over long distances, often spanning over miles.

  • Power over Ethernet

Ideally, the outdoor access point is provided both power and data by using a single Ethernet cable. This option is, however, costly and will seem unreasonable to most people. You are more likely to use a power adapter and connect it to a PoE injector.

Fortunately, all access points covered in this review are powered by PoE, as it can be hard to find a suitable power outlet outdoors.

  • Wi-Fi Technologies

Over the years, networking hardware has become more accessible and affordable. We now receive the newest technologies while the cost remains quite reasonable.

  • Setup

You want to choose a device that uses the IEEE standard, as it specifies the outdoor access point’s capacity. The standard is expressed as 802.11X. The X is replaced by b, g, n, or AC. These letters refer to the wireless standard used by the access point. Most modern WAPs use the AC-standard, but some still use 802.11b.

Why is this important?

You want to check the standard before buying since this will limit the bandwidth it can handle. A WAP using 802.11b can only handle 11Mbps across the entire network. This is often too slow for most people. The 802.11g is slightly faster and can handle speeds up to 54Mbps. The two highest standards are n, which handles up to 300Mbps, and the 802.11AC provides rates up to 5,200Mbps.
