1 Epson DS-320 – Best Basic Photo Scanner with Feeder

This portable duplex scanner with ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) from Epson is fast and accurate. Capable of scanning photos, documents, and plastic ID cards, this is a very capable device with a great range of functions.

However, it is missing two features that might be a deal-breaker for some. The scanner requires AC power and does not support Wi-Fi. That means there will always be two cables necessary for it to operate.

Setup and software…

From unpacking the box to scanning your first item can be achieved in about 20 minutes. The drivers and software must be downloaded from the Epson website; there is no disc included. But that’s ok because you probably don’t have an optical drive anyway.

A range of software is included, with the primary utility for scanning being Epson Scan. Alongside this is Epson Document Capture Pro, Abbyy FineReader OCR, and NewSoft Presto! BizCard.

Performance…

This scanner can scan 2-sided documents. In fact, it can scan up to 25 double-sided pages as a searchable PDF file in under a minute. It’s not like you are going to be scanning double-sided photos, but this is still a very handy inclusion.

Speaking of handy inclusions, there is a slot at the front of the scanner. It can be used to scan plastic cards or business cards. With a respectable resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, no matter if it is photos, documents, or cards, this device is up to the task.

Epson DS-320

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Extensive software options.
  • Double-sided scanning.
  • 20-page document feeder.

Cons

  • Mains powered only, no battery.
  • No Wi-Fi available.

2 Epson FastFoto FF-680W – Fastest Photo Scanner with Feeder

Next up in our best photo scanner with Feeder reviews is a dedicated model. While the previous Epson product was more of a document scanner that can also scan photos, this is different. The FastFoto has earned its name. It is designed specifically for digitizing old photos to be saved forever.

There are a number of innovative inclusions that make what can be a very dull, monotonous, and time-consuming task much more manageable. So, let’s take a careful look at these features to see if they appeal to you.

Getting underway…

The device itself is small. It does have Wi-Fi connectivity, although that does slow the process down considerably. Unfold the feeder and the retrieval tray at the bottom; you can then load up to 36 photos into the feeder at a time.

Once you have downloaded the driver and software, you are ready to start scanning. The Epson FastFoto software is one of the most user-friendly and intuitive packages we have ever used, making it perfect for beginners.

Impressively easy…

Once you load up the software, you choose some simple options. These include where you want your pictures saved, how you would like them enhanced, if you would like them uploaded to Google or Dropbox, file type, and more.

Once your options are selected, hit the scan button. In under a minute, you will have 36 organized files with fully enhanced photos. This really is one of the most straightforward photo scanning processes, with fantastic quality. Of course, all of this does come at a price.

Epson FastFoto FF-680W

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Pros

  • Easy to use and fast results.
  • Intuitive software.
  • Up to 1200 dpi scanning.

Cons

  • Not affordable for everyone.
  • Wi-Fi operation is slow.

3 Plustek Z300 – Best Budget Photo Scanner with Feeder

It’s understandable if you don’t want to spend too much on a photo scanner. So maybe this convenient little device from Plustek will be more suitable. Of course, you won’t get all the same features or quality, but it is still competent.

There is still a feeder on this scanner; however, you cannot feed multiple photos at one time. They must be loaded individually. The feeder is still gentle with your pictures, though, and you can have confidence that they won’t be damaged during scanning.

Ready in no time…

Setting up the device is easy. It does still come with a disc, or you can download the software and drivers online. Once that is complete, just connect the device using the included USB cable.

There is a final step, which is calibrating the device. An included calibration sheet is fed through the scanner when prompted by the software. Once you click finish, then you’re ready to start scanning your photos.

Software and features…

The software that is included with the device is called ePhoto. While it is not the prettiest or most user-friendly, it does have all the necessary functions. File choices include JPEG, PDF (including multiple page and searchable), PNG, TIFF, and Windows Bitmap.

The maximum resolution is 600 dpi; however, this does slow things down. The device performs best at 300 dpi. It is possible to scan 36 photos at 300 dpi in just over two minutes. This device does also has document scanning capabilities too, which is handy.

Plustek Z300

Our rating:4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

Pros

  • Gently scans photos through the feeder.
  • Highly affordable option.
  • Faster than a flatbed scanner.

Cons

  • Manual single feeder.
  • Scan quality is mediocre.

4 Doxie Q – Best Portable Photo Scanner with Feeder

This small, well-built, portable scanner made by Doxie Q is a great value multi-purpose device. It is primarily a document scanner; however, it can still perform very well when it comes to scanning photographs.

Featuring an ADF that can hold up to eight pages makes it both efficient and convenient. Unlike the similar Epson scanner, though, it can only scan single-sided documents and does not support double-sided scanning.

Preparation for use…

This can operate as a standalone device featuring Wi-Fi and battery operation. You first must install the software, though. During the installation of the software, you will be given directions on how to prepare your scanner.

Once you have completed installing the Doxie software, you are ready to start scanning. The software itself appears a little outdated; however, you can still perform all the essential tasks necessary. And it does also support OCR (Optical Character Recognition).

Impressive capabilities…

The Doxie Q can scan at a resolution of up to 600 dpi. This is more than enough to provide ultra-accurate document replication and sharp photo scans. File options include both JPEG and PDF, with all PDF formats supported.

Having a replaceable battery and Wi-Fi capability may be more important to you than a 20-page document feeder like the Epson. So if you have a smaller workload and would prefer the added portability, the Doxie Q might be the option for you.

Doxie Q

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Eight page ADF.
  • Completely wireless operation.
  • Good build quality.

Cons

  • Software interface needs updating.
  • Scan speeds are slower than the competition.

5 Xerox DocuMate 152i – Best High Capacity Document and Photo Scanner with Feeder

Xerox has made an affordable desktop scanner that is capable of providing quality copies of both photos and documents. It may not have all the features and speed that some of its competitors offer, but it still offers solid performance.

The device itself is relatively compact but does expand once you open up the feeder and the receiving tray. The ADF can take an impressive 50 documents, which will make short work of heavy workloads.

Choosing a profile…

There are nine different profiles to choose from on the scanner. These include scan, search, print, email, fax, edit, archive, photo, and magazine. Each of the profiles is customizable using the software called Visioneer One Touch.

Every profile can have their file types and destination changed. In addition to the One Touch software, there is also software for document management, OCR, PDF conversions, and image enhancement.

Makes heavy workloads smaller…

While it isn’t the fastest scanner on the market, it’s no slouch either. Scanning 25 double-sided pages as a searchable PDF with text recognition was completed in just under two and a half minutes.

For scanning photos, this printer only has a maximum resolution of 300 dpi. While this will be fine for documents, photo accuracy does suffer. It will be sufficient for basic application but is much more document orientated than for high res images.

Xerox DocuMate 152i

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • 50 page document feeder.
  • Customizable profile settings.
  • Accurate OCR.

Cons

  • Only 300 dpi resolution.
  • Not highly accurate for photos.

6 Brother DS-620 – Best Occasional Photo Scanner

This Brother Scanner will suit those who need a scanner but won’t use it too frequently. The performance is more than acceptable but lags behind some of the competition. Its reliability and affordable price definitely make up for this, though.

While it will obviously miss out on inclusions such as Wi-Fi or running from a battery, it can still be powered using only the included USB cable. The other obvious exclusion is an ADF. Each item will have to be fed through individually.

Still, highly capable…

With a maximum resolution of 600 dpi, you can still complete some quality scans. Regular text looks quite close to the original. Receipts and bold text can look blotchy, but nothing that will make it illegible.

When it comes to color scans, while the images retain their resolution and detail well, the hues do tend to suffer. This can quickly be fixed with the use of editing software after scanning. Not great if you have many items to scan, but fine for smaller workloads.

Ease of use…

As we said, to make this scanner affordable, there will be some things missing, such as a feeding tray or an output tray. These aren’t huge losses, but it does mean that you will need to manually insert each item, then be ready to collect it afterward.

This has an effect on the speed at which you can scan too. While some of these devices can scan around 20 pages per minute, the Brother will deliver around three. So if you can live without some bells and whistles for the sake of making significant savings, you may have found your scanning Brother.

Brother DS-620

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Very affordable option.
  • Resolution of 600 dpi.
  • Powered by USB.

Cons

  • No feeder or output trays.
  • Poor color accuracy.
  • Slower than the competition.

7 Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500 – Most Efficient Photo Scanner with Feeder

This cool little device from Fujitsu has several smart features to make scanning easier. Suitable for everything from photos to documents, to receipts and business cards, nothing is too much trouble for the ScanSnap.

Not only can this scanner tackle large workloads, but it can also have them scanned at an impressive speed and with excellent quality. The interface is easy to use with an LCD touchscreen and can be used as a completely standalone device.

No photo left behind…

While many of these devices are really document scanners that can also scan photos, the ScanSnap does it all well. We were remarkably impressed with the quality of photo scanning that this device is capable of.

When a photo is scanned, the colors are highly defined and replicated very well. There are no signs of smudging or fading. In most instances, the initial scan is of high enough quality that no further enhancements are even necessary.

Clever features…

Included is a clip-in tray for scanning business cards and receipts. We found it works very well, guiding without jams. If you have a pile of documents that need scanning, though, the ADF can accommodate up to 50 pages.

Not only can it hold a large capacity, but all 50 sheets can also be scanned in about two minutes. The touchscreen on the front of the device is responsive, and the menus are easy to navigate. Not only is this model super easy to use, but it also performs exceptionally well.

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1500

Our rating:4.4 out of 5 stars (4.4 / 5)

Pros

  • Impressive color accuracy.
  • 50 page ADF.
  • LCD touchscreen.

Cons

  • Less affordable than other options.
  • Feeder can slightly bend photos.

Best Photo Scanner with Feeder Buying Guide

With so many great options available, you may now be a little overwhelmed with choice. This is why we include a buying guide to help differentiate between each of these products. We will now break down and point out the significant differences.

There are basically two main categories with these scanners. They are portable and desktop designs. Apart from the Epson FastFoto, all of these devices are designed for both document and photo scanning. Some will scan photos much better than others, though.

Desktop Scanners

Doxie Q - Wireless Rechargeable Document Scanner with Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)

Obviously, a desktop scanner is designed to be stationary. The advantage to these usually relates more to document scanning abilities. All here except for the Plustek have an ADF that helps greatly with heavy workloads.

Besides the ADF, the other area worth considering is the resolution capabilities. To give you a better idea, 300 dpi is probably a little low for photo scanning, 600 dpi will suit most needs, and 1200 dpi would only really be used for printing large posters and billboards.

Portable Scanners

If you would like the convenience of bringing your scanner with you, you might want to consider a portable model. Models like the Epson DS-320 can still offer features like an ADF, fast scanning speeds, and high scanning accuracy, even on the go.

Another benefit to a portable model is that it can easily be stored when not in use. Great for those that only plan on using their scanner occasionally. Portable scanners are also a more affordable option.

Other Things To Consider

Besides the resolution and an ADF, there are a few more decisions to make. Is the primary use for photos, or will you plan on also scanning documents? It would make sense to have a device that can perform multiple tasks effectively.

The software plays a large role in scanning too. Do you need OCR? What about creating PDF documents? Some of the software even offers professional photo enhancement possibilities.

So, in summary, the areas you should consider before purchasing are Resolution, ADF, software, affordability, and whether you want a desktop or portable device.
