Are we wrong? Didn’t think so.

But don’t worry! There are a lot of quality options at your disposal. You could head into town and outsource your needs to a local print shop or cut the hassle of leaving home and just order from a print-on-demand website. Nothing wrong with either of these options, except for the pure and simple fact that these services are not cheap, and take time.

The last option is to invest in your own, high-quality printer. This third option has many advantages over the first two, that unless you really cannot afford the initial price outlay, we think everyone should get one of these.

But, what exactly makes a printer one of the Best Printers for Photos?

This really depends on what you want to use it for. For the average home user, there are a plethora of options out there that can produce great results at a low price.

Or maybe you need a more advanced system with more optionality like the ability to print on multiple sizes of papers, in which case you should opt for an office-grade dedicated photo and banner printer for the task, since it will output high-quality work, and do it quickly.

Choices, choices, choices…

HP ENVY Photo 7855

You will also have to choose between either an inkjet or laser printer. The main difference between inkjet and laser printers is the type of ink or toner used. Laser printers use powder ink, while inkjet printers use liquid ink.

As a result, it’s possible to get crisper images when you print on an inkjet printer. Laser printers are also much faster and cost less to run, but they are more expensive upfront. Inkjet printers can’t handle the heavy usage that a laser printer can, but you get a more accurate final product in terms of color reproduction.

With all this fresh in our minds, sit back and take a browse of our top picks for the best photo printers currently available!

1 Canon Pixma Pro-100 Wireless Color Professional Inkjet Printer with Airprint and Mobile Device Printing – Best Professional Printer for Photos

The Canon Pixma Pro-100 is the new smaller model in the profession Canon inkjet range, but don’t let its size fool you into thinking this is not up there with the best home or office printers available today.

The PRO-100 uses eight ink tanks for its dye-based inks and FINE technology to deliver prints that are of the highest quality. The gradient and color reproduction truly second to none, regardless of whether they are producing colored or monochromatic prints.

That’s not all folks…

The Pro-100 is capable of using several different types of media sizes (up to 13 x 19 inches), with the primary loading bin on the top holding around a third of a ream of document paper.

But the printer also offers a second tray for loading thicker photo or art paper that wouldn’t fit in a regular printer. The advantages that this second tray bring should not be understated, as the thicker medium makes prints of photographs or drawings that every bit as good as those produced on a professional press!

Marvelous…

There is also a borderless printing mode, which we found produced marvelous results. What Canon calls it “Optimum Image Generating System” (OIGS) technology logically selects the best ink combinations automatically, taking away a lot of the hassle for users, and speeding up results.

At this price point, there aren’t many better printers on the market.

2 Epson Expression Premium EcoTank Wireless 5-Color All-in-One Supertank Printer with Scanner, Copier and Ethernet ET-7750 – Best Wireless Printer for Photos

For years, consumers have been pleading with manufacturers to do away with wasteful and polluting cartridges for a greener alternative. Epson have done just that with their all-new EcoTank, opting instead for easy-to-fill, supersized ink tanks.

And, before you ask, yes, “supersized” is the correct adjective here!

These tanks come pre-filled in every new unit, giving you up to two full years use (enough to print documents up to 9,000 pages, or thousands of 4” x 6” photos) before you even need to start thinking about having to refill them! And the benefits are not purely environmental, with an average saving of 80% for ink refill costs!

The Epson Expression Premium EcoTank ET-7750 is a 3-in-1 multifunctional unit, meaning you can also scan and photocopy on top of straight printing, and duplex (double-sided) printing functionality is thrown in as well. The scanning resolution for A4-sized documents is up to 1,200 x 2,400 dpi, which will cover most bases.

Are three better than one?

Here we see three input paper trays. The main tray can hold up to one hundred sheets of regular A4 paper, the second handles envelopes and photo paper, and the final tray allows you to print directly onto printable compact discs. Print speeds are slightly slower than the Pixma Pro-100, but the results are fantastic.

During testing, the Epson Expression Premium EcoTank ET-7750 passed all our tests with flying colors, with the quality of prints never dropping. The only small issue we ran into was more than one piece of photo paper, making it through the hopper occasionally.

3 Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Wireless Color Wide-format Printer, Amazon Dash Replenishment Ready – Best Budget Printer for Photos

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a printer on the market that could produce top quality prints at a fraction of the price that you are used to paying? Say hello to the brand new Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 wireless color wide-format printer! Coming in at a much lower price than we are used to seeing, this great little unit packs a punch.

Incorporating the use of the durable Claria Ultra HD inks make this printer all the more suitable for photographers because of its wider color range and deeper blacks. It’s the first time Epson has used this ink in a machine primarily marketed at home users, which makes this our top budget pick!

If you’ve got the time…

This also means that the XP-15000 is no speed demon; in fact, it was one of the slowest we tested. But we are never in a rush when it comes to printing, and the top quality that it produces is plain to see.

The main tray capacity is 200 sheets of plain A4 paper, with extra room for 50 sheets of any size of photo paper, ten envelopes, or 80 sheets of A4 Epson Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper. Epson has granted control over bordered or borderless printing. We opted for mostly borderless during testing, which stood up to the much higher priced competition.

In a nutshell…

Why is this on our best printers for photos list? If you are hunting for a reasonably priced photo printer, take a peek at what the Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 has to offer. We are certain you will not be disappointed!

This is probably the closest to a consumer-grade printer that we are looking at today, but don’t let the price fool you.

This machine is packed with features…

Features that will make photographers, artists, and graphic designers grin from ear to ear! Supporting less expensive ink is another way HP has helped curb the costs, and while that does mean that prints will be slightly lower quality and resolution, we found the final product to be more than acceptable.

And you won’t find many machines that can handle paper as thick as the HP ENVY Photo 7855 can, making this one our pick for poster printing!

Worth it…

Tray options are slightly limited, but for the initial cost, we didn’t mind this minor hassle. Printing speeds vary depending on size and paper type, but overall this machine is no slouch. 5 Canon PIXMA PRO-10 Color Professional Inkjet Photo Printer – Best Canon Printer for Photos

The Canon PIXMA PRO-10 is the mid-range option in Canon’s professional printer line, sitting below the top of the line Pixma Pro-1 and above the dye-based Pro-100. The Pro-10 is able to strike the perfect balance between price, ink cost, and photo quality. It prints exhibition-style photos, and just like the other models in the series, it excels with monochrome prints.

The single feeder tray is responsible for holding a wide range of paper sizes.

You can choose to feed:

  • 50 sheets of plain paper
  • 20 sheets of 4-by-6-inch photo paper
  • Ten sheets of 8-by-10-inch or letter-size photo paper
  • One sheet of A3+ photo paper (although, in testing, we found it could handle up to 10)

Truly breathtaking…

This is a photo printer at heart, and that’s where this little beauty really shines! Zero tinting was found in black and white prints, and the range and depth of colors produced is truly breathtaking.

Of the three printers found in the Canon Pro range, the Pro-10 is our favorite. With the best harmony of cost, speed, size, and print quality, we are pretty sure you will be just as impressed as we are!

6 Epson SureColor P400 Wireless Color Photo Printer – Best Color Photo Printer for Photos

Replacing the near-perfect Stylus Pro R2000 in Epson’s line, the Epson SureColor P400 is the lowest priced of three units in the SureColor range.

But can it live up to its predecessors’ reputation?

Yessir! This printer is no sloth, with speeds rivaling higher-priced units, and gallery-quality prints at sizes up to 13 by 19 inches. Also included is support for printing larger prints, banners, and panoramas from roll paper, something rivals Canon has left out.

Epson has used two distinct blacks and seven separate colors of ink – and what they call a “Gloss Optimizer” that helps reduce flat spots in the print. This all adds up to you being able to create near-gallery-quality photo prints with excellent color accuracy and saturation, without having to declare bankruptcy!

Seemingly limitless…

Opting for three paper feeding trays has meant that the options for paper type are seemingly limitless. The main tray has a capacity for 120 sheets of plain A4 paper, 30 sheets of photo paper, or a single page of 13 inches by 19 inches.

The two other feeds are located at the rear, with a dedicated 13-inch wide roll paper feed and a manual feed tray, which is used for different photo and art papers too heavy for the main feed, and for CDs and DVDs.

Superb App…

Once connected, you can print from mobile devices over Wi-Fi using Epson’s iPrint app. This is our top pick for companion apps. Easy to use, with quick results. Exactly what we like to see!

7 Epson SureColor P600 Inkjet Printer – Wireless – Best Epson Printer for Photos

The Epson SureColor P600 is the big brother of our last reviewed printer, the Epson SureColor P400. And just like its smaller sibling, the SureColor P600 Inkjet Printer is one fantastic unit!

Ok, but what separates them?

Well, other than the obvious difference in price, the first notable difference is the ink color palette and the outputs that this results in. The Epson P600 uses vivid light magenta and light cyan as its two fill in colors.

The result?

A more subtle real-world feel. The P600’s output is better suited to photographs, as well as portrait and fine art printing. The P600 also offers the advanced black and white (ABW) system, which mixes the three black inks to produce natural grayscale images.

The cost of operation is very similar between the two machines, and connectivity options are only slightly better in the P600. The SC-P600 does its best work when we busted out the fine-art and quality photo paper.

A foundation for excellent color…

We never noticed surface problems, the combination of the three rich blacks create a foundation for excellent color, shadow details are retained, and very simple approaches have been made to match up everything to images on the screen.

Yes, the printing times are marginally slower than the P400. But when quality is the main objective, these longer printing times ceased to be an issue.

Epson SureColor P600 Inkjet Printer - Wireless

Our rating:4.1 out of 5 stars (4.1 / 5)

Pros

  • Many connectivity choices.
  • Nine-colour printing with variable droplet size.
  • Best in class for matte and fine-art paper printing.
  • Impressively high-quality output.

Cons

  • Slower than expected printing speeds
