1 Genie GK-R – Best Genie Wireless Garage Door Keypad

This keypad is only compatible with Genie brand garage doors. Genie has been making garage doors for over 60 years and is still going strong. So you can trust that they know a thing or two about garage door openers.

Compatible with all Intellicode openers since 1995, there’s a good chance if you have a Genie door, this will work. Supporting up to three openers makes this suitable for anyone with multiple garage doors.

Open sesame…

Powered by two AAA batteries, the keypad is simple to install. A backplate is mounted using two screws, and then the pad itself clips on easily. Great for installing in a convenient, yet not obvious location.

It is easier to pair the keypad to the opener before mounting the keypad. Enter the learning setting on your opener, pair the device, and then set the pin. A temporary pin can also be set from three to eight digits. It will be active until the main pin is used.

Magic security…

Security features haven’t been forgotten with the Genie. Intellicode technology automatically changes the access code every time it’s used. This prevents any chance of your door being hacked.

A backlight is installed into the keypad so it can safely be accessed in low lighting conditions. A flip-top lid covers the pad itself, offering protection while at the same time keeping the device inconspicuous.

Genie GK-R

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Trusted company.
  • Easy installation.
  • Proven Intellicode security.

Cons

  • Only compatible with Genie doors.
  • Can only store one main code at a time.

2 LiftMaster 877 Max – Best LiftMaster Wireless Garage Door Keypad

This is another dedicated keypad, this time for LiftMaster garage doors. The advantage of purchasing a dedicated keypad for your brand is that you can be confident it will be connected quickly and function correctly.

Compatible with all LiftMaster doors from January 1993, that should cover pretty much all of them. Part of the Chamberlain Group who have been industry leaders in access solutions since 1984.

Design and installation…

The gray-colored unit features a flip-top lid revealing 13 buttons in total. Backlit keys assist with accessing the door in the dark. Pressing the keys themselves doesn’t require too much pressure as they are very responsive.

Make sure you have paired the keypad to your opener before mounting it. Installing the keypad is a breeze; all you will need is a drill and a screwdriver. Drill two holes, screw the backplate in, then attach the keypad.

Features and security…

Power comes from a single 9 Volt battery. Once you have power, up to four openers can be paired to the keypad at the same time. This can be done by programming a 4-digit master code. It is also possible to set a temporary code for tradespeople or deliveries.

If your door was manufactured from 2006 onwards, it can be closed with the single press of a button. For security, LiftMaster uses Security+ 2.0 that works similarly to Genie. A new code is generated and sent each time the door is used. However, we recommend you use YouTube instead of the included programming instructions.

LiftMaster 877 Max

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Easy to install.
  • Security+ 2.0 feature.
  • Single-button close.

Cons

  • Only compatible with LiftMaster doors.
  • Programming instructions are difficult to follow.

3 LiftMaster Universal 387LM – Best Universal Wireless Garage Door Keypad

This is the first universal keypad so far. It is compatible with most major brands of garage doors, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Stanley, Multicore, More O Matic, Wayne Dalton, and more.

The unit is white in color with a slide-up protective cover. Underneath, there are 12 buttons illuminated by an orange-colored backlight. You can have confidence in this device, knowing that it is produced by LiftMaster.

Getting up and running…

Included in the instructions is a list of manufacturer frequencies and corresponding numbers. First, program your 4-digit PIN and frequency number. The door can then be used by entering your PIN and using 0 as an enter key. Pressing 0 again will close the door without the need to re-enter the PIN.

The pad itself can easily be mounted in a convenient, safe location with the two included screws. However, we prefer a flip-top cover instead of the slide as it does make installation a little more awkward.

Convenience only 4-digits away…

Now your garage door can easily be accessed without the need for keys or searching for that remote. Only one PIN can be programmed at a time. Unlike the other keypads, a temporary PIN is not supported.

Changing the PIN is easy enough, though, so you can still easily set a code then change it back if you like. Being a LiftMaster product, Security+ 2.0 is supported, giving an added sense of security.

LiftMaster Universal 387LM

Our rating:4.2 out of 5 stars (4.2 / 5)

Pros

  • Works with most major brands.
  • Easy to program.
  • Bright key backlight.

Cons

  • Slide up cover rather than flip-top.
  • No temporary PIN function.

4 Chamberlain 940EV-P2 – Best Chamberlain Group Wireless Garage Door Keypad

Let’s call this a semi-universal keypad. It is compatible with most Chamberlain, LiftMaster, and Craftsman automatic garage doors manufactured after 1993. The unit looks almost identical to the 877 Max we already checked out.

A flip-top lid protects the keypad from the elements at the same time as giving a more attractive, sleek look. The gray color helps blend into most environments without looking intrusive.

Same but different…

Despite the fact that they look the same, there are some subtle differences between the 877 Max and this 940EV. One of which is the battery used. Instead of a 9V, a single lithium CR123A is used. These tend to conserve power better when not in use.

The other main difference is the compatibility with other door models. However, in what seems to be a trend here, the included instructions are incorrect for programming the keypad. We recommend instead following the instructions found on YouTube.

Handy features…

If you have multiple garage door openers, this device can connect to each with its own separate PIN. That way, they can all be opened or closed independently. Closing can also be completed with a single button push.

Dual-band radio frequencies are used, which helps if you live in an area with high radio interference. As with the 877 Max, you still retain the temporary PIN function and all the regular security features.

Chamberlain 940EV-P2

Our rating:4.7 out of 5 stars (4.7 / 5)

Pros

  • Compatible with most Chamberlain Group doors.
  • Supports multiple doors with independent PINs.
  • Dual-band radio frequency.

Cons

  • Not completely universal.
  • Incorrect programming instructions in the box.

5 Giant Universal 2.0 – Best Budget Universal Wireless Garage Door Keypad

Our final keypad is also a universal device. Basically, if your opener has a smart/learn button or DIP switch, then it will be compatible with this device. Covering most major brands like Chamberlain Group, Do It, Linear, Genie, and more.

A simple white design made from strong plastic. A battery compartment can be accessed at the bottom with a screwdriver. Above that are 12 round backlit buttons that are covered by a weather-proof slide-up cover.

Lower in price, not in features…

Even though this could be considered a budget keypad, it’s not short on features. Some of which even more expensive models are missing, like being able to use two different PINs for two different doors.

You also don’t miss out on one-touch closing, temporary PIN function, or bright keypad illumination.

Anything else worth noting?

Power is supplied using a single 9 Volt battery. Once the device has power, detailed instructions are included for pairing to your brand of opener. The process is straightforward and shouldn’t cause any issues.

We love installing wireless devices, as it is so simple. And this keypad isn’t any different. Once mounted using the two screws, the device is ready to go. Easy, safe, secure access to your garage door on a budget is now possible.

Giant Universal 2.0

Our rating:4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Pros

  • Compatible with most doors.
  • Affordable option.
  • Same features as more expensive models.

Cons

  • Slide cover instead of lift.
  • Limited technical support.
