Corsair K63 Wireless Review

One thing that PC gamers all have in common is a desire for gaming peripherals that are not only affordable but also functional, customizable, and add a touch of flair to their battle station. And it’s safe to say the Corsair K63 Compact Mechanical Gaming Keyboard ticks all those boxes.

Corsair K63 Wireless Review

The Corsair K63 Wireless is an outstanding, multifaceted, high-performance mechanical gaming keyboard. And one that is priced to please consumers while sending a shiver down every competition’s spine.

With the recent shift away from full-sized gaming keyboards to more compact options, Corsair have followed suit on the K63 with the removal of the NUM pad.

So, join us as we find out why so many gamers are already calling this the best budget gaming keyboard in our in-depth Corsair K63 Wireless review…

Corsair K63 Wireless

Our rating:4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Design and Features

At a little over 14″ in length, the K63 won’t take up much space on your desk. As we mentioned, the first thing you will notice when you unbox is the total absence of the NUM pad. Also missing is the usual row of macro keys, and the function key is also nowhere to be seen.

Compact brilliance at its best!

There is a handy media center at the top left, a Windows Key lock button, and three dedicated audio buttons tucked away at the top right corner. Plus one button for toggling between the four levels of LED brightness. The spacebar features a faux carbon-fiber raised pattern, which is satisfying to the touch.

The K63 features a full array of original Cherry MX Red Switches. These switches feature Gold Crosspoint contacts and are rated to withstand a minimum of 50 million clicks. Cherry MX Reds use 4mm travel with an actuation point of 2mm, linear action, and 45g actuation force.

eAs a result, these are some of the best key switches for gaming and also a joy to type with. Anti-ghosting is in full effect on the Corsair K63. “Ghosting” refers to keystrokes that are not detected – a pain in the behind for gamers. Unlike many keyboards, every key is covered – not just the WASD section. Additionally, these switches also offer full key rollover.

What is full key rollover?

Simply put, this just refers to how many simultaneous keystrokes can be registered at once. Since the K63 can register all of its keys being pressed at the same time, we refer to this as “full key”.

Again, perfect for gamers with high octane gameplay demanding multiple keys to be engaged at once. And another reason why this is one of the best gaming keyboards available.

Let there be lights…

When it comes to in-unit illumination, the K63 uses bright red, per-key LED technology. Among the best wireless mechanical gaming keyboards, very few offer this useful feature.

If you are looking for a more varied color scheme of backlighting, then you may be a little disappointed here. But, to be honest, we loved the simplicity of the warm amber glow. And with per-key lighting, you have near unlimited lighting adjustability.

Software

Like all of Corsair’s gaming peripherals, the K63 comes with Corsair Utility Engine (CUE) software. The software not only allows gamers to create actions such as double macros, and re-mappable key assignments, but also timer countdowns, dpi adjustments, and much more.

With CUE, the user can also “create multiple color profiles as well as different modes that will enable separate lighting and action configurations based on the game or application”. Furthermore, you can share these profiles with other Corsair users and then browse thousands of user profiles on the Corsair forums. Our favorite setup was “Rain” layered over “Pulse”.

But that’s not all you can do with CUE!

This versatile software also allows users to take full control of the lighting scheme. Dynamic illumination for sophisticated lighting controls, program actions, and macros for any programmable button.

This offers a huge amount of control, from switching icons and background to match your desktop with the new custom user interface to uniting all of your Corsair gaming peripherals together in one easy to use application.

Performance

Without a shadow of a doubt – the Corsair K63 lives up to its name. No surprises here, with the world-renowned and industry-leading Cherry MX, switches handling just like we expect. With their easy actuation and small travel, these are perfect for fast-paced gaming like CS:GO or PUBG.

Furthermore, these super responsive switches don’t bottom out in this instance. Therefore, the K63 is much quieter than other keyboards we previously reviewed.

Likewise, slow-paced games cab be handled with ease and grace. In the past, we favored more tactile keyboards, but after a few weeks of testing the K63, that changed. Hours-long gaming sessions are easy on the hands, and we also liked the quietness.

How about typing?

The fact that we are using the K63 right now to type up this review should be proof enough of how great a keyboard this is. Fluid, responsive, and precise are the first three things that come to mind. When testing out typing speed, it was about 8% faster than our last keyboard. Doesn’t sound like much, but when you write for a living, it’s a huge advantage.

Final Thoughts

To some, the Corsair K63 may seem a little light in features or, dare we say it, basic. But when we strip it all back, Corsair have covered every single base we want for a gaming keyboard. We really like the simplicity of this keyboard.

Thanks to its compact size, it’s the perfect on-the-go peripheral for any gamer who is short on battle station space. It fits easily in our laptop bag, making it great for writers and gamers alike. If we had to nitpick, then we guess we would have preferred a removable cable. But other than that, there are very few downsides to this fantastic keyboard.

Unlock your potential…

Sure, you could go and spend double what the K63 costs and get an amazing keyboard. But for the price, it is safe to say you are getting one of the best compact mechanical keyboards, especially for gaming.

Loaded with features like Cherry MX Red mechanical key switches, dedicated volume and multimedia controls, and full board anti-ghosting with full key rollover. As well as per-key red LED backlighting, large font keycaps, and CUE Power, you simply get an amazing amount of functionality for a bargain price.

Until next, go get your game on.
